  • How long does a bottle of wax last you?

So, how long does a bottle of wax (16oz - 18oz) last you? Considering you wax every 3 months and you drive a FAMILY SEDAN.

How much wax do you apply each time you wax? After that and it's simple math.

I'd guess that a person would use about an ounce per application, 12 ounces in a year so the bottle would last about 1 1/2 years. Apply a light coat and a bottle should last about 2 years.

Wax every three months and it's going to be 4 times a year.
      An ounce per application = 4 oz.per year = 4 years for a 16 oz. bottle.
Even waxing every 4 to 6 weeks allows a 16 oz. bottle to last me for a year or two.
It probably deserves another thread, but I wonder how many of us hobby detailers ever completely use up a bottle. I think most of us will try something new before the original is gone.

I said it was simple math.... I did not say I was _good_ at math.

The only products i have re-bought have been the original NXT, A12 cleaner wax, Mirror Glaze #7, and Zymol Cleaner Wax. I usually try other waxes before the bottle runs out and have had to throw bottles away that go bad.

            That's probably not too uncommon.
Even an exclusive Meguiar's user has about 15 or 20 different Meguiar's sealants and waxes available to them right now.
Considering that a new wax seems to show up about every year or two, I'm not sure a hobby detailer could ever completely use a bottle of all the Meguiar's waxes in their lifetime.

Re: How long does a bottle of wax last you?

People tend to overuse wax, sometimes by a huge amount. We've had people send back bottles or cans of a wax because they weren't happy with it after a single application. Yet when that container comes back it's almost half gone. With a single application. And we've all seen pictures of a black car coated in a layer of hazed wax so thick you have to look hard to tell the car is actually black! We hear this all the time in our Saturday Classes, and people are often amazed at little wax we apply in the garage demo. We like to find the person in the class with the loudest complaint about how hard wax is to remove, and let them wipe off a properly applied coat. The look on their face is generally one of amazement.

If you think you might be using too much wax go to Wal-Mart and pick up a 3oz clear plastic bottle from the Health & Beauty section. With FAA restrictions on how much a given liquid product can be carried on board these days it's easy to find these small bottles. Pour some liquid wax into this small bottle, but only fill it about half way, maybe a bit more if you have a really large vehicle. That's all you get to use to wax the whole vehicle. If you need more than that you need to adjust your technique, because you really don't need more than that! These little bottles come with handy little flip tops too, so they're perfect for this.

We took this to a crazy extreme at SEMA 2008 while prepping cars for Ford. Using a G110 and a W9207 Soft Buff 2.0 Finishing Pad we applied NXT Tech Wax 2.0 to 39 cars with a single bottle. Still had a fair amount left, too. Sure, we did all 39 cars one after the other, and you could never do your own car 39 times in a row. But after a few cars the pad was basically damp with product. As long as you can transfer a thin, uniform film onto the paint there isn't much of a reason to add more product to the pad. Yes, it was an extreme case, but it makes the point that you don't need a ton of wax to get the job done.

Thank you Mr. Stoops for the perfect answer to my concern. I'm new to the forum stuff, now I'm off to find out what gets your pads clean.
