  • Which consumer product on frash paint?

Are Swirl X, Scratch X 2.0, and UC safe for fresh paint? When i say fresh paint, i mean when i get my car back from the body shop, not right out of the paint booth. Thanks

Just back from the body shop will still be pretty fresh out of the paint booth. I am not sure which of the consumer line cleaners are fresh paint safe though.

I thought they put it in an oven to bake the paint or something

Vehicles sprayed in a booth with a heat make up system are cured at 140 degrees metal temp. for about 15 - 30 min depending on the clear coat mfg.

Than the metal temp is cooled downed to ambient which allows the clear to cross link and get hard / cure from the surface down. with some paint mfg clears and cure temp/times you can de-nib and polish after 1 hr.

our booth has a 1 million BTU gas fired burner to get metal temp to 140 takes about 12 mins.

Your paint will still have solvent escaping for about 30 days more or less depending on ambient temp.

So I would let the paint breathe 30 - 45 days min before polish and give it min 60 - 90 for any wax.

Some might, but most will have you wait.

Well I just got my car back. There seems to be polish residue on my plastic trim and polish buildup in the cracks. The body shop must have polished them.

Did they color sand and polish? Any orange peel?

There is no orange peel so i guess they sanded it.

There is polish residue on my plastic trim. How do i remove it?

My hood is swirled to heck now....

Since the polish residue is fresh, washing with soap water should help to get some and/or most of the residue off the trim and out of the cracks and crevices. Try to find a brush that's soft and will get into thin areas like between fender and door lines, etc.

Then there's always, M3916 Vinyl Cleaner which is also very good at removing polish residue off of plastic and rubber trim.

As for the swirls, you can remove them by hand or with a DA Polisher, just get some Ultimate Compound and some SwirlX and go to town on her...

Sorry to hear you got the industry standard for quality when it comes to a new paint job.

Local guy around here paid top dollar for a custom pearl paint job on his show quality 1955 Chevy Pickup. He brought it over a few weeks ago and I showed him how to remove all the swirls.

First I had to show him the swirls, like most people he just saw shiny paint and figured swirls were normal. He's truck's finish shines like a diamond now and is swirl free. (So is his black Jaguar, he kind of got into the paint polishing thing and now he's and expert!)

Thanks Mike. It makes me mad when i see this horrible work. But then i feel better when i realize i have the ability to remove them thanks to the members of MOL

My repainted bumper (repainted 2 years ago) matches the newly repainted fenders. The fenders do not match the factory painted hood. This is all by the same body shop
