Hi and welcome to MOL. A polishing step is looked at as a optional step but you will get great results from using a polish like #7 or #81. They will also help replenish essential oils lost through oxidation to bring out that deep wet look shine. Just to ask will you be doing the who car with ScratchX by hand? Or do you have a machine like a DA polisher?

My plan was to handpolish the whole car with scratchX. But maybe only the sides of the car, cause they look really bad when the sun shines directly into them in the evening forexample.

Re: Do i need a polish?

Removing swirls out of a clear coat finish by hand is a lot of work, often times you'll need to apply ScratchX to the same section and really working it in 2-3 times to start seeing a dramatic difference, so when you first start out, maybe just do a door or fender all the way through the process and see how your results look.

        That would be,

        Wash the car
        Clay if needed
ScratchX a panel (Door, Hood, Fender etc.)
        Apply a coat of wax
        Inspect

When you apply the ScratchX only apply to a section about a foot squared and really work it over the paint for about a minute and then wipe off and inspect.

Repeat this up to 3-4 times until it's looking better in your eyes, then wipe off any residue and apply a thin coat of wax and let it fully dry before wiping it off.

See if you can make one panel look good, before tackling the entire car.

Let us know how it goes...

Re: Do i need a polish?

I agree tackling your car by hand using scratchX can be a long and tiring process because like Mike stated it can sometimes take 2 to even 4 applications of ScratchX on one area before the scratches and swirls are all gone. If you have the means look into getting something like Megs G110 DA polisher and some of the cleaner/ polishes like #80 speed glaze and #83 dual action cleaner polish but always remember to try the least aggressive method first. This will help in getting out all those swirls and leave behind a great finish in a fraction of the time and spare you a few nights of soar arms and hands. If you do go that route you will also want to invest in some W8006 foam polishing pads and W9006 foam finishing pads. One last thing, remember when using scratchX you will want to put some passion behind the pad to remove the paint defects because to properly remove any scratch or swirl means to slowly remove the clear coat leveling the clear coat to the bottom of that scratch.
