  • PlastX on clear coated wheels?

This one is probably for Mike, or someone at Meguiar's...

Can PlastX be used on clear coated rims? After all, I believe the coatings used on wheels are essentially clear, plasticized polyurethane... correct?

Anyhow, the reason I ask is because of I have plenty of PlastX around, and I'll never use it all up on lenses and such. In addition, I see that another well know car care product manufacturer actually suggests using their plastic polish on CC rims. Some folks who have tried their product claim it works great.

When I read the back of the bottle on the PastX, it said not to use on painted surfaces, so I was a little hesitant to try it out.

    Thanks

The clear coat on wheels is essentially a paint. I treat my machined clear coated/machined clear coat/painted wheels as the paint on my car. I have a lot of the Deep Crystal products and I use DC #1 then put two coats of M26 on them. I've used NXT, Gold Class and M21 on the wheels and they look great. On the wheels for my Yukon, I even clay barred them then cleaned the paint followed with a wax. I have no build up of brake dust and even with winter on us up here in No. California (near the Oregon border, No. Calif that is), snow, salt on roads, my wheels get filthy but not enough to warrant a dedicated wheel cleaner as of yet. I maintain with Quik Wheel Detailer. Great stuff.

My recommendation is to follow the directions of the wheel manufacturer. I bought my wheels at Les Schwab and they sell their own cleaners/waxes but told me what were on the wheels. Clear coat and/or painted. Have two sets of wheels from them on my Yukon and Neon.

Even with proper treatment of my wheels, my clear coat is flaking off on the wheels for my Yukon. But hey, they were Ultra wheels and cheap and had them for 3 years plus, so they may turn into machined, polished wheels which requires different polishes to keep nice which will be done this summer

When everyone returns to work next week on the 2nd, we'll check with R&D on this, better safe than sorry.

        Hi Nappers,

Essentially, I understood it the same way for a long time. However, I'm now learning that the clear-coat finish on many wheels (even OEM) is not exactly the same as the clear used on paint. If I understand it correctly, the clear finish on wheels is softer, thicker and a somewhat different type coating .

Whatever the case, I'll wait to hear from Mike. If it turns out that the PlastX cannot be used on the wheels, I'm going to try some of the other stuff, as I've heard the results are excellent... and I love excellent results!

Good to know as we don't want to use the wrong product on our rides. I always ask (not that I buy new wheels everyday.lol) what is on them so I can properly treat them.

That seems very possible. I have always wondered the same thing. Like how the wheels will be fine on a car covered with CC failure. I want my car covered in whatever that stuff is. (not really, but hey...)

IMO use scratch X and follow up the some wax ...

Not yet, my e-mail was down since before Christmas and was just restored around noon today, thus I've been playing catch-up in e-mail behind the scenes all day and still not caught up.

                  We'll check though...

Thanks Mike... no big hurry. Right now, it's 11 degrees at my house with a foot of snow on the ground. So, I don't see myself polishing much of anything for a while.

                      *Bump*

Weather is taking a turn for the better. Might get a chance to try this out this weekend.

                        Hi Mike,

Think you might be able to find something out on this sometime this week?

                        Thanks

                          Hey Boss,

I contacted Meguiar's Management for you and here is the official response. I will quote it:

“While it may be safe to use on CC wheels, we can not endorse nor stand behind the product if it is used outside of its intended purpose which is for clear flexible or rigid plastics”

                          I hope that helps!!

                            Thanks Tim,

I'm think I'm going to give it a try.
