    Re: Longer lasting NXT

I wax the whole car befre taking it off. By the time I finished waxing it, its about 1/2 hour. I might wait a little longer before I take it off. The next day I would do another coat.

I tried the 12 hour waiting period this weekend. We'll see what happens. Even better swirl filling ability with the longer wait!

I usually wax the entire car, go have a cup of tea then come back and buff off. Seems to do the trick for me :-)

I've never been real good at applying it thin enough and letting it dry without having a difficult time removing it.

Indiana humidity really makes the Spray Booster Wax hard to work with. You need to apply it so thin you cannot even see it! It would be easier to just use the NXT Paste. The spray wax looks great but it is not meant for use in humid weather. I find the #21 easy to work with in high heat and moderate humidity, but the colder weather means long drying time.

Aw, heck! that brings back memories of working at McDonalds. If you had nothing to do, you were expected to pick up stainless steel cleaner and towels!

    Hi Mike,
I did the 5 steps by hand, but I let the wax over night because I was already exausted. The next morning I took it off and the car was WOW.

Un fortunatly the next day started raining and I don

In a perfect world, there would be a window of time between applications for the previously applied polymers to fully set-up. To re-apply a wax over these polymers will act to disrupt them.

    Re: Longer lasting NXT

I seem to recall previous discussions regarding set up time centered around how much time is given between two applications. This is completely different from how long the product stays on the surface before the excess residue is wiped off.

If I remember correctly, Meguiar's chemists told Mike that the NXT remaining on the paint surface needs 12 hours to bond before a second coat is applied. If you apply a second coat sooner, the benefits are limited to better coverage.

I find it amazing that people here and epecially on that other car-care site claim they can see differences between waiting 30 minutes vs. 12 hours before LSP wipe off when the comparisons are usually made between two different details spaced one week to six months apart.

In my opinion, a valid comparison would require the entire vehicle to be prepped, NXT applied uniformily and then wiped of in 30 minutes on 1/2 the car and 12 hours later on the other half. Further, since the results are so subjective, third parties should judge any differences without knowing which side is which. (And, by the way, HOW DO YOU MEASURE DURABILITY, ANYWAY??? I started a thread about NXT's protection on a car that Mike detailed for me and theorized NXT's durability should be measured no by how it looked months later, but by how easy or difficult is was for me to remove contaminents from the surface. My car didn't look like it was waxed last week, but claying and prepping the surface for coats of LSP was far easier than I expected.)

I think the risk of contamination by dust and dirt waiting 12 hours before wipe off is greater than any durability pay off.

As far as I know, Mike uses the same techniques he recommends on this site on vehicles he details. If there was a benefit to leaving product on the surface for extended periods, why wouldn't Mike do so on the high end cars he's detailed?

I think we need to remember just how subjective this hobby is. I've been using Nxt on my Mach1 for years and recently detailed my Subaru with #21. I would swear the #21 looks different than the Nxt, but realize that I'm comparing two different colors on two different cars.

Even if I applied #21 on my Mach1, how could I compare it to Nxt? I would be comparing a three month old Nxt application to a new detail.

Unless I applied two ddiferent products to the same car at the same time, I wouldn't swear seeing to any differences in court!

R&D, the folks that create the formula, know the products and procedures best. Our chemists are Top Guns in their field, the dedication and passion they have for their craft equals and exceeds the passion we all have for our craft, trust us on this one, these guys live, eat and breath chemistry.

They formulate all of our waxes to dry in around 15 to 20 minutes in normal temperature and humidity, after the wax has fully dried, it is ready to wipe off. The colder it is and the more humid it is, the longer it will take for the wax to dry, kind of like pouring water onto a sidewalk in the winter versus in the summer, it will take longer for water to evaporate off the sidewalk in the winter versus in the summer.

The most important factor to wax longevity is surface preparation followed by correct application of the paint protectant, followed by allowing the paint protectant to fully dry before removal.

Because people live in different climates, because people use their cars in different ways, because people maintain, or don't maintain their car's finish in different ways, and because people park or store their cars in different ways, there is always going to be a wide range of results between how long a wax lasts under all these different factors.

Meguiar's recommends allowing the wax to dry until it swipes clear, in most cases this will be 15 to 20 minutes. We don't recommend letting wax sit on a car for extended periods of time, like overnight and if you choose to do this we cannot stand behind your results or lack thereof.

Also, when you allow wax to sit on a surface for an extended period of time, you run the risk of having dirt and dust land on the wax and then get ground into the finish during the wipe off process, so choose your process carefully.

Next time I use NXT, I will try leaving it on a lot longer and see what happens. I have a heated garage so I can use it in the winter. I have the Paste version so I should have no issues with getting it to haze over.

The only thing to do is try it and see if you notice a difference. The more of us that try it and report back on our experience will give us an idea if it is worthwhile to leave it on longer. It certainly won't hurt anything leaving it on that long. Just make sure the car doesn't get dust or dirt on it while it sits with the NXT on it!

Larry I believe you are correct 1/2 hour or more is enough time.

It is interesting however that their is no rush to wipe it off.

Anyway, It's fun to see the resulting finish.

I must be a bored car crazy guy in this cold rainy Northern Ohio weather.

Yet still, something happens under that layer...
