  • #80 and a PC vs. #82 and a rotary

    Mike, Tim and others:

There is only slight marring and very few swirls on my black Hemi. Which to you think would be the way to go for my first spring detail -- #80 and a PC or #82 and a rotary?

The marring is so slight that perhaps I should just use the PC with either product.

This winter has not been very hard on the finish of my truck although the it has received lots of winter crud. Use of the coinop carwash (soap and rinse) followed by a QEW wash has worked very well.

NXT has held up well to the carwash soap.

    Hey Tom,

Knowing how well you take care of your Hemi, I am sure that the swirls are indeed very light/mild. Therefore, I would suggest the #80 Speed Glaze, W-8006 Polishing pad and the PC set to speed 5.

So while I still prefer using the rotary most of the time, there are times when it may not be needed or the risk is too great. If the swirls were deep or you had a few isolated scratches, then I would reach for the rotary. However, since the marring is light, a rotary would be overkill, IMHO!

Great news that the truck came through winter with only mild marring! That very fact speaks volumes of how well you have taken care of it! Great job Tom!!

    Cheers!

I vote for PC and #80. Maybe even to passes as needed. On the QEW front I've noticed slight wash marks from using QEW on my black truck. Not a bad thing, thats the price to keeping her clean during the winter months. I'm sure the marks will buff right out with #80.

      Good luck!

Like the others said, #80 with a PC. #80 has seemed to work better for me with a PC than #82 with a PC. I don't use a rotary but it probably increases the aggressiveness of #82. Is #82 one of those products you can use with a PC, but really works better with a rotary?

Be sure to use a MF towel for #80 removal.

I have a new Makita 9227 Rotary, but I'll be glad to wait to try it out until I really need it -- like just before I'm ready to trade in the truck.

            Hey Tom,

LOL!! Yeah yeah...again knowing you, when it comes time to trade it in, it will still look better than a new one!!!

As for #82, I prefer to use it with the rotary. I can control its aggressiveness better by changing rotary speeds and/or pads. Hence, I can better deal with either harder or softer paints.

            Cheers!
