  • 105 + 151 = omg!

    Hey yall!
This weekend we received a 2000 BMW 3 series to do a complete detail on ... initially from speaking to the gal over the phone and based on her description I quoted a price based on 151 + plus all my standard offerings for the rest ... upon seeing the vehicle my heart sank as the car was riddled with deep swirls throughout! I did a test spot with my rotary and wool pad loaded with 151 and got a pretty decent result but some marring .... so I busted out the 105, hit the entire car with the rotary and wool pad. Normally I go straight to 205 but I was at about 3-5 oz on a 32 oz bottle and on a previous detail it was a major pain to remove so i ruled that it was no longer good .... so now what >!?!?!?!?!?
I reach for the DA with a polishing pad and 151 and the end result was spectacular!
if you havent tried it I would definitely recommend the combo!

Good to know, I know 105 can put down a pretty good finish for having as much cut as it does

wool 105 and straight to polish 205 or polish 151 sounds like a big gap.
it was the car light color?

That was it... 105 then straight to 151 On black paint
When you know what your doing with a rotary you can finish out 105 very nicely (used it on a polishing pad at various speeds and it was all I used once before)
But in this case as there was some light marring and I cleaned it all up with 151 PRC

I would disagree considering Meguiar's designed these twins to be used just like that - M105 followed by M205.

But, you're the man with all the exotics, so .

I corrected a black Holden Calais (Pontiac G8) which was riddled with swirls, scratches and general "dealership lack of care" marks. I tried M105 with a foam cutting pad however the paint didn't react well (swirls remained and some marring/haze was present). I then tried M105 with a W4000 wool pad and it finished LSP ready. No swirls, no haze, no scratches in the finish. I followed up with M205 on a DA polisher with the 8207 polishing pad and it did deepen the gloss IMO, however this step was optional as the paint was so clear already. If pressed for time I could have easily waxed/sealed straight after the M105.

I have duplicated the results on different paint types and colours, however it isn't always going to produce the same result owing to the wide variance in paint and paint condition.

I'm in agreement with some of the latest comments. Since #205 is intended to be the follow-up for #105, and #151 has about the same cut rating as #205, it makes sense that you would be able to clean up any marring left from the initial #105 pass. The bonus then is, when you're short on time you can leave off a step by using the #151. It's waxed and ready to go!

                Exactly my point John!
It was supposed to be a one step job but as I hate returning a car and saying "next time we can target the swirls" I'd figure I'd throw in an hours work for free for a new customer in hope for some referrals from her GFs... Btw she works at Hooters! ))))

thanks , i don`t wool cars that often so is good to know. most of my projects require 105 and cutting pad when the car is in bad shape and it happens twice a month. other than that just light 1 step , 2 steps , sip and 205 , easy a?

                    Re: 105 + 151 = omg!

When we teach our Advanced Class we damp sand with 1000 grit, refine with 3000 grit, cut with W4000 or W5000 wool and M105 and then finish with either W8207 or W9207 and M205. That final pad selection is determined by the paint on the test panels we use.

For the record, we use both test panels and full hoods on stands. They are painted at a local body shop whom we ask to "do a lousy job; plenty of dirt nibs, orange peel, etc". They're a really, really good body shop so it's almost difficult for them to actually paint a panel poorly!! But if the panel was perfect from the body shop, it's really hard to teach or test on it.
