  • Question about New Polishes vs DACP

So I've been away from the detailing scene for a while and I want to get a crash course on what is new and how it compares to what I've already used.

Currently my arsenal includes the following:

Initial polishing using #83 DACP and a Polishing Pad with RO speed setting 6.

Remove the light hazing left behind by DACP using S100 Paint Polish - yellow wax pad speed setting 5.

Finish with S100 Carnauba, #26 or NXT by hand depending on the car I'm working on.

So I'm trying to determine if any of the new products offer better performance at removing the light scratches in paint while also enhancing gloss. Is there anything better in the Meguiars professional line than #83?

I'm also nearly done with the S100 Paint Polish and ready for something better, I'm only familiar with Swirl Free Polish and #9, anything else? I'm leaning towards #9 but always open to suggestions.

    MBZ 500E,

I will try and help you out the best I can. If you are only using a random orbit machine(porter cable,g-100,g-110) 83 DACP is the most aggressive product Meguiar's recommends for this machine and should be used only when other less aggressive products are not giving you the results you want. I would recommend 80 speed glaze as a good starting point for the lighter swirls/scratches in the paint. 82 Swirl Free Polish and 9 Swirl Remover are very similar in respects to the correction ability. 80 Speed Glaze is a 4 on the cut scale and 82/9 are I believe a 2 or 3. 80 is also very rich with polishing oils so it will also add a good bit of pop to the paint after use. I would recommend a Meguiar's 8006 polishing pad for all of these products. Do not use the 7006 cutting pad as it will possibly instill hazing to the paint and add more polishing work to remove them. Do a test spot of about 18x18 with the least aggressive product first then step up as needed to get the results you are after. Meguiar's recommended to use the least aggressive product first the step up. Depending on what machine you are using don't go over speed setting 5 as you could cause the velcro on the pad to delaminate from the pad. Get a good supply of pads for each product and do not use different products on the same pad. I have 3-5 pads for each of 83,82,and 80. You could also get some 9006 finishing pads for 80 and 82 for a final swirl free polish. You could follow 83 with 80 or 82 to remove any hazing from 83 and to get that perfect finish. The more pads you have the easier it will be to correct paint problem. This is due to the fact that once the pad becomes saturated with product it stops spinning and just jiggles on the paint and does not correct the paint as easy. When you notice pad saturation switch to a dry pad and the paint correction wll continue more easily. If you feel I gave you a real crash course feel free to ask more questions. I hope I answered your questions and helped you out.

Hey Afshin! Long time no see!

Here's thread you might like to check out...

The History of Meguiar's Online Discussion Forum

You helped to organize the first class we taught here at Meguiar's Garage coordinated via a discussion forum and the above thread documents this for posterity. Here's some pictures from that first class.

The History of our Saturday Detailing Classes
Meguiar's has always placed a strong emphasis on education ever since entering into this business in 1901. Meguiar's moved to their current headquarters here in Irvine, California in 1989 and since that time has always offered educational hands-on classes in our Training Facilities. With the advent of the Internet and the introduction of software to create what we call discussion forums, we began coordinating our classes held on Saturday through discussion forums as it was a way to easily reach car clubs represented by their online communities. Our first class coordinated through the MercedesShop.com Discussion Forum was held on a Saturday here at Meguiar's dates back to August 31st, 2002 We're happy to say that many of the friends we made through this class are still friends today and a few are even active members of our forum.

The time stamp on this thread is 07-11-2002, 10:46pm and the class was held on Saturday, August 31st 2002

The sign-up thread is 8 pages long with the pictures and comments after the class being posted to the same thread starting on page 6 It has 115 Replies and right at 6000 views since it's creation and the posting of this thread.

Here's the only two pictures we have from that event although were trying to locate a few more...

We have a new cleaner/wax coming out that's also good for polishing with the added benefit that after it's finished polishing it's leaving the surface protected and if you like you can top with a second LSP.

Not sure if you ever need a compound but should the need arise we also have a new compound that has pretty much set the standard for the industry called M105 Ultra Cut Compound.

If you haven't signed up for the newsletter you might consider it as we're getting ready to kick off some Roadshow classes and they will be announced via the newsletter.

Good to see you're still alive and kicking!

          Andrew,

Thanks for the tips, especially about having extra pads. I always noted that the polishing was more difficult as I worked through the panels but it never occurred to me that the pads were saturated and needed to be changed. I think Swirl Free Polish might be a good solution, need to do some more research on this.

            Mike,

It has been way too long! I needed a reason to get back into serious detailing and I just bought my second 928 and this one will be a show car! It's nicer than the 500E and way more fun.

I miss those classes and picking up new tips/tricks from you and the crew. I also miss having the chance at trying the new products and experimenting on my hood. Seriously always amazed me how different a product can look when you try one next to the other.

Maybe we can set something up here in New England. We live just south of Boston now and there are a ton of car nuts in this area (almost as much as CA). I just signed on with PCA and I'm also pretty involved with the 928 car clubs and I know many would be interested.

Either way I need to make an effort to stay in touch.

PS: I have some CD's which have photo's from a few of the classes, I will see if I can dig them out and find more from the first one.

I'll check out M105, I'm looking for something a bit more powerful to remove some deeper scratches but I'm still limited to my RO so if this is only good for a rotary I'll have to pass.

I will also sign up for the newsletter, hope you make it out this way! Let me know if need help setting up an event.

I need to learn how to post pics...

I believe it's only suggested for use with the rotary. However, many people have reported great results with it on a DA. I wouldn't hesitate to get some and try it with your DA. I'm guessing the results will be great for what you stated you are looking for.
