  • Mirror Glaze All Metal Polish on chrome?

So the add copy for Mirror Glaze All Metal Polish says:
Safe on coated and uncoated wheels. Safe for all metals, including stainless steel, gold, brass, copper and pewter.
It doesn't mention chrome. Why is that?

Is there any reason not to use it on chrome? Is it a good choice for chrome? Is it just assumed that "uncoated wheels" or "all metals" includes chrome?

Id also like a response on this. I was wondering about this earlier on SCG as well. Wouldnt it make sense that it would work seeing as NXT does?

Not mentioning chrome is probably a mistake, not precautionary and purposeful forethought, but we'll double check just to make sure.

The thing about chrome is you don't want to use anything that will scratch it because the layer of chrome is thin enough that you can't really work scratches out of chrome.

Re: Mirror Glaze All Metal Polish on chrome?

Okay I checked with Mike Pennington, our "Director of Training" on these questions related to the wording on the labels and the actual intended use of the products.

All of our metal polishes are safe for use on chrome, that is in and of themselves they will not scratch chrome. The word chrome is not included on the label because the products are formulated for polish able metals as in metal components. Chrome is a coating applied over metal components and in some cases plastic components, either way it's a coating a thin coating, not the component itself. In keeping with Meguiar's philosophy of using the least aggressive product to get the job done, when working on chrome surfaces to remove any kind of topical stain or smudge and to restore the maximum clarity, shine and brilliance, then opt for a wax like our NXT Tech Wax or a cleaner/wax like Meguiar's Cleaner/wax or ColorX. All three of these wax products when applied by hand, working with your applicator material will offer enough safe cleaning ability to safely and effectively clean and polish the surface to it's maximum clarity and shine.

Chances are good if you have chrome in bad condition such as rust or flaking, peeling chrome on a wheel, then on product on earth is going to fix this type of damage.

When using our metal polishes or any companies metal polishes, be careful of the way you apply them and be mindful of the material you use to apply them with as a products performance and cleaning ability or in this case aggressiveness is affected by the way you apply it and the material you apply it with.

For example to apply any of our metal polishes to clean chrome by hand with a soft foam applicator pad would be safe.

To apply our metal polishes to a dirty wheel, using a dirty rag might lead to scratching but in this example the culprit would be the dirt on the wheel or the dirt on the rag. We know this is pretty basic but we have had people apply our products the wrong way and then blame the product. An example would be the guy who applied our ScratchX to the clear coat paint on his truck using a red shop rag, (like mechanics use at auto repair shops), and scratched the paint, the culprit was the type of material he used to apply the ScratchX, not the ScratchX. So always keep in mind that application material and application method are both factors to consider whenever you're working on any surface with any product.

It's also important to always work clean, that is to always work on a clean surface, whether you're getting ready to clay or clean your car's paint or wax your chrome wheels, you don't want any dirt on the surface, so be sure to wash and dry the surface clean before starting.

As for waxing chrome wheels or trim, Meguiar's does not specifically make a wax for wheels because at this time we cannot provide a product that we believe will hold up to the conditions wheels are exposed to when the car is a daily driver. Also, the use of many wheel cleaners, especially wheel cleaners agitated with a wheel brush will act to clean the wheel but also to remove any protective coating.

That said, something is better than nothing, so the application of a metal polish or a wax to clean the chrome will make the chrome look better and provide a layer of protection but for how long is subject to how the surface is treated or the conditions it is exposed to.

In a nutshell, wash your car and your wheels and if you want to apply a coating of wax like NXT Tech wax to chromed surfaces. Save the metal polish for polishable metals.
