questions about "one step" #67

I've had to guys recommend the #67 to me based on what they saw my boat needed to fix light oxidation. One is a 30 boat mechanic that knows a bit about cosmetics...so we'll assume they are sending me down the right path...

I've got two questions

1. Does this "one step" compound cleaner remove wax too...or should I be stripping? I don't think there is much wax on my hull...but though I'd ask.
2. They are recommending I just go right to the Flagship Premium Wax after the #67...does this sound correct or should I still be working with a polish in between?

As you can see this "one step" thing still has be concerned...and I find the Meguiar's website rather a train wreck of info (or lack of) on the topic.

1. No need to strip any wax.
2. Yes, that would be ok. Though you can always use a pure polish in between.

There is a milder product or two... hard to say for suere what you would need. Any pic? Would you be applying by hand?

Thanks for your input...no useful photos since it's in a warehouse...it's 36ft of boat so we'll be using a random orbital variable speed. The boat has basically be unused for 4-5 years (although out of the sun). I would say the hull is lightly oxidized with no swirl marks or damage while the topside is medium oxidized and doesn't shine anywhere.

Are the other products mentioned a one step too?

M67 will quickly cut through any existing wax that may be on the surface. If you haven't waxed in a couple of years odds are there's virtually zero wax on the hull so it's really a non issue.

Odds are you can go straight to wax following M67, but it really depends on what you're ultimately looking for. Some additional gloss can be achieved by using M45 Polish between M67 and wax, but you don't absolutely need to do this.

From your description, we think M67 is really the way to go here. In past talks with our Marine/RV guys here at Meguiar's, that's usually their go-to product unless it's a new boat with only the very lightest of fade or swirls, in which case they'll start with a less aggressive product. But again, from your description, stick with M67.

Michael, thanks for the helpful words, I think you put these questions to be for me.

I should have mentioned the boat is a 1982 Tiara and it has been 4+ years since getting waxed.

I will be executing the job over the next two weekends and will report back from my experience on using these products which were just ordered online.

I'm going to be using a random orbital polisher to apply the #67...what RPM is recommended for application?

A random orbital like the Meguiar's G110v2/Porter Cable 7424/Griot's Garage 6"? If so, you'll want to set the tool to speed 5 or even a bit higher for the M67, slower for less aggressive liquids.

What type of pads do I want for the #67 and the Flagship Premium?

I have a Porter Cable and it comes with what is called a "polishing pad" but I'm not really polishing, am I?

Should I have what I see is called a cutting pad for the #67? Wool?

Then use the polishing pad for the wax?

Is that the white pad, or the Meguiars yellow polishng pad?

It's white the Porter Cable and it doesn't give any indication if it's fine or porous...it simple says includes polishing pad. Very thick and white.

I used yellow B&S pads when I used #67. I must say I'm hooked on #67 my trailer was a wreck and it came out amazing. I used a GG6 on speed 5.5, six section passes and cleaned the pad after every section 20"x20" was complete. Also rotated pads every two section so I wouldn't over heat the pad.

1. Are most available through car car locations...I"m curious if you guys know local solutions or buy online for your specific needs.
2. When are wool pads used...I see some people mention them for cutting while other say waxing.

1. Ehh.. foam pads for sale vary from place to place. West Marine (I think its called) may sell some pads, they sell a lot of the liquids. As for car stores, you may need to find a professional store, or get a little lucky at the chain stores. You can check the Dealer Locator for ideas, but call before you go.

2. Never for wax, or at least not if you want good results. And wool would not be used with a DA type polisher either, rotary only for cleaning/compounding.

So it sounds like foam only for the DA unit I have...and they vary for each need. Does anyone know what good the default big foam pad the Porter Cable is idea for then...the #67 or wax?

It would actually tend to have the best shot of working well for polishing on gel coat.

It tends to be a little strong for car paint.
