  • Gell Coat help

I have a 2006Renegade motor home that is on a freightliner chassis. These are great motorhomes for towing but they have one problem. They put out a small black oilsubstance that stains the gel coat. It is on both sides so it is not comingfrom the exhaust. they are small dots that get duller when washed but do not goaway. I have tried a few products with no success. Any help would beappreciated and please keep in mind I am not a professional detailer or donemore then hand wax a car. I am willing to buy product and tools I just need toknow what to buy.

    Thank You,

I have tried a few waxes but the last thing I tried was a Meguiar #45 polish.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect those products to help much.

#44 or #49 are more like what you would want to try. Or if you had some Ult. Compound from the car care line. Those products have more cleaning ability, and defect removal ability.

Looks like you're getting some sort of staining in the gel coat all right. Waxes and a pure polish like M45 are not designed to remedy that situation, which explains why they didn't fix this for you. You are going to need something at least mildly abrasive (don't let the term scare you!) in order to clean this up. Murr suggested M44 or M49 and that is exactly what we would recommend as well. These two products, and M91 above them, are specifically designed to correct this sort of issue (as well as fine scratches, oxidation, swirl marks, water spots, etc) on gel coat finishes.

Gel coat is much harder and quite a bit thicker than automotive paint, not to mention much more porous, so slightly specialized products will make the job much easier than traditional automotive paint care products will. You can certainly use traditional automotive paint care products bu they may not be up to the task.

Thank You very much. If I use the #44 first is that one step or do I need to wax it afterward? If so which wax do you recomend?

I also have an aluminium trailer that has a baked on paint. Can the #44 and #49 be used on it?

                Re: Gell Coat help

M44 is a cleaner only so you will need to wax after. For gel coat we recommend our Flagship Premium Marine Wax. As for the baked on paint on the aluminum trailer, you're better off sticking with automotive products on that since the gel coat formulated products may be overly aggressive.
