  • 1999 Fleetwood Bounder gelcoat discoloration

    Good Day,

I have recently removed the vinyl graphics from my 1999 Fleetwood Bounder motorhome that were very cracked and faded. Upon the removal of the graphics, I discovered how discolored the balance of the gelcoat was in contrast to the white gelcoat under the graphics. The uncovered gelcoat is yellowed, but otherwise not in bad condition. I have always waxed with Meguiars Cleaner Wax and thought it looked great until now. The finish is not chalky unless you push your finger quite hard against the surface and then you will get a residue from the finish. I have not waxed in about a year and I new it was due but wanted to remove the graphics first.

I have purchased a Porter-Cable r/o sander/polisher, wool bonnets, polishing bonnets and the Meguiars Fiberglass Restoration System. I have used the Oxidization Remover #49 on a wool bonnet, a setting of 4 on the polisher with no color change at all. Following the instructions exactly, the remover is definately smoothing out the surface and leaving quite a good shine, just not removing the yellow discoloation.

I have read many of the posts in the RV section of the forum and have read so many different recommendations that it leaves me a bit perplexed. I would appreciate any suggestions from anyone who has had experience with this type of situation and know what worked for them. I know there are stronger products but I don't want to use more than I need.

I have attached a photo that shows the slideout on the left which is not oxidized and the main body of the RV on the right. You can also see, on the right, where the graphics were removed and how dramatic the discolation is present.

    Thanks in Advance,

    Zebulon

Re: 1999 Fleetwood Bounder gelcoat discoloration

    Hello again,

Just an update, I decided to us my 7" polisher (non-ro) as I read in another post. Utilizing the same product as before and increasing the speed, I was able to reduce the yellowing about 60% after repeating the same spot several times. This is a much better result than using my PC which yielded no results. I am leaning toward going with either the 67 compound or the 91. I am just wondering with my results so far, which would work better and not be too abrasive.

Give M-67 a go. It has some cut, but not anywhere near what 91 has. Plus it has some polish that will put some oils back into the gel-coat.

To be honest, after that much time with the graphics covering the original gel, I doubt that the yellowing will completely gone.

Keep us 'in the loop' on how it turns out...

Thanks Bill, I will order the M-67 and hope it is enough. I hope so as I would hate to have to order the 91 as well, but I guess I will see. I was hoping that someone from Meguiars would respond with their opinion, since it is their product. However, I do appreciate your input. I will certainly let everyone know what works and try to follow up with some photos.

Just to add, in my uses...when I've used #91 I've needed to follow it up with 67. The 'power compound' left some marring that required (for me) using something more gentle to finish it down.

            Bill,

Thanks again for the follow up. I will be ordering the M6732 this week. It should work well as the M4932 took off over half of the oxidization. Even if it is not perfect, it will still be much better than what I have now. I will let you know in a couple of weeks how it turns out.

              Hi Zeb,

Please could I ask how you eventually got on with M6732? I have exactly the same problem on my RV as you describe. Would you say a decent machine polisher like the G220 and Meguiars Fiberglass Restoration System is a good place to start, as you did?

Hope you can throw some advice my way.

              Paul
