  • Wax and diesel smoke stains

We pulled a 48 Ocean a couple of weeks ago figuring to do a clean and wax while a hurricane was passing. Boat looked great when she went back in but the captain said we shouldn't have waxed the stern because the wax would absorb the smoke from the diesel exhaust. I've always waxed the sterns. Yes, smoky engines leave a residue, but I find it is easier to clean off if there is a good layer of wax. Eventually, a cleaner is the only way to get the stains off, but liquid cleaner strip the wax, too.

So, wax on the stern or no wax?

I think the Captain was blowing smoke up your stern

wax the stern out of it! Diesel soot is just like any other foreign material, it leaves a spot, but it can be EASILY wiped away with something as simple as a towel and water. Its basically no different than a form of dust, ive never seen diesel soot leave a stain unless left on for years and years.

i know ALL about diesel soot....

Tell the Captain to maintain his engines correctly.
