  • 1983 Mercedes-Benz 280S paint correction and beyond

I recently bought a car from the owner of this old Merc. When I asked what he wanted for it, he said he would like a detailing job on his other car.
At first, it was ment to be an in/out kind of job, but when i saw the car, I decided to give it a little more, it deserves it.

-This car has the original paint job, and 220000 kms on it.
It has been treated well, but it needed some spa treatment. I decided to go with a two-step for it.

upon delivery (washed the day before by owner)

    Wash process, wheels:
Rims cleaned with Wheel Brightener 4:1 and spritzed with WB 10:1 while brushing
Tires cleaned with APC 4:1 -white stripe on tire wall was still brown, so:
    Tires cleaned again with #39
After cleaning, rims recieved Carpro IronX for iron cut

    Wash process, body:
    Mac 124 Prickbort (body solvent/degreaser)
Grille/emblems etc. cleaned with APC 10:1
Entire car foamed with Shampoo Plus via K

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Ok, i hope this works. going twice:

            Wash process, body:
            Mac 124 Prickbort (body solvent/degreaser)
Grille/emblems etc. cleaned with APC 10:1
Entire car foamed with Shampoo Plus via pressure washer
Hand washed with #62 and Shampoo Plus

            Then, pulled inside.
Clayed with various claybars and Last Touch 1:1

            inspection:
Like mentioned, car has the original paintjob (almost 30 years old)
So it looks better than a lot of 2010 models i have seen lately. However, some swirls and some RIDS

Driving home after the second day in the garage with this project, this was the weather status all of the sudden..
Good thing it got sorted out again before the car was done.

            Correction:
            MG and Biltema masking tape
            Makita 9227 rotary buffer
Solid rotary buffer (for spot pads)
Chrome was polished with MG all metal polish
MG #105 via burgundy solo wool and burgundy wool spot pad
MG #205 via yellow 6,5 soft buff and yellow spot pad some areas speed buffed afterwards with black Lake Country

Final inspection used for removing dust and inspecting.

LSP of choice for this one was #21 2,0 Synthetic Sealant
Final inspection outside done with #135

            Protection/final shots:

I see i need to work on my photo and documenting skills

Sorry for the delay, thanks for looking!

Absolutely amazing turnaround!!! The final shots of the car look like it's brand new again, and these old Benz's last forever!!

And did we understand correctly that detailing this car was your payment for taking the other car home with you? Out of curiosity, what was the "other" car you bought with this detail?

Wow what a complete turnaround. Looks like the paint belongs on a brand new Benz. Not a 30 year old Benz.

                          Thanks, Michael.
Story is; I overheard a woman talking about taking their old 91 Audi 100 they where about to take to the junkyard.
I have seen this car many times, and it does not look al that bad, so I asked her if I could buy it.
Her husband came up with the idea that if I could do a quick refresh on the Benz paint, I could have it.
I love the 91-97 Aud C4 chassis, so this just had to be done.

On the Benz, like mentioned, this was supposed to be quick. (I was thinking one-step #83) -when I saw the potention in this Benz, I had to take it further. Ended up sitting in my garage for a full week.
Owner was overjoyed when he got it returned, fun stuff!

No I do not see a lot of white-wall tires these days.
On this car, the owner had switched the rear and front wheels, so the rear tires were brown from the brake dust accumulation
                            from the front wheels (automatic).

Two rounds with APC 4:1 and scrubbing did not help all that much, #39 was a saver for this!
