  • Black Toyota Corolla - First Wet-sanding attempt!!

The client was another client's son. Very nice guy who has some not so nice, young co-workers.

He let his car get a little too dirty and they decided to write on it and draw certain kinds of symbols in the dirt. Then, another young good samaritan co-worker tried to help out by wiping off the writing on the hood with a piece of paper..................................

The, there was some damage on the rear bumper from when he backed into an undercover police vehicle. That must have been fun.

We agreed to remove the deep scratched on the hood, rear bumper and around the door handles and follow that up with a cleaner/wax.

Now, let me give you a break down of the process.........

    1) Wash with ONR at 2 oz. in 2 gallons of water while spraying off some of the heavy dirt with my pesticide sprayer

    2) Clayed each section as I washed each section (wash the panel with ONR, spray ONR clay lube, clay away). I do not dry between.

    3) Tires, wheels and wells cleaned with Super Degreaser (AMAZINGLY WELL DONE ON THESE WHEELS AND TIRES), ONR, various brushes and a pesticide sprayer.

    4) Removed deep scratches on rear bumper, hood, and above door handles with a mixture of M105, D300, 2000 grit sandpaper and Microfiber cutting disks. M105 and the microfiber cutting disks worked really well!!!!!

Used ONR as a lubricant for wet-sanding.

    5) LC white polishing pad with A12 Cleaner/Wax at speed 4

    6) Vacuum and wipe down interior with ONR

    7) Clean door jambs with CroftgateUSA Aquanil-X

    8) Cleaned interior and exterior glass with Stoner's Invisible Glass

    9) Dressed tires with Hot Shine Tire Foam and wells with Hyper-Dressing at 2:1

    TOTAL TIME: 6 HOURS

Anyway, let's get to the pics!

    BEFORES

    From the paper................

Claying after 1/4 of the roof..............

    AFTERS

Told you it worked well on the wheels!!

After some D300 and a Microfiber Cutting Disk on those hood scratches.....

However, some of those scratches were really deep so I broke out thr 200 grit sandpaper and a 3M Sanding Block. I like this block because it's really big and easy to hold.

Woops.........no after of the hood but I promise I pulled out all of the marks with M105 and a Microfiber Cutting Disk on speed 4.

Remember what the bumper looked like? Well, I'll show you again!

Did quite a bit of wet-sanding with 2000 grit to achieve this. Some of the marks went through the paint as you can see and some were too deep tp safely correct.

On to the cleaner/wax application for which I chose A12 Cleaner/Wax as it's my favorite.

No, this is not a black finishing pad but a white LC polishing pad. WAS THE PAINT A LITTLE DIRTY?!?!?!

Interior was pretty good, just did some vacuuming and wipe down with ONR.

    A FEW FINAL SHOTS

    Great work !
That thing was beaten pretty bad for a car this new. I believe this model came out in Spring 2008 as a 2009, so it's not that much old. I still can't believe how and why people let their car go this bad before they do anything !

Nice job! Hard to believe it's the same car. Why was the white pad so black? It's a base/clear car right? "Dirt" after clay should be minimal and the pad should stay white? What am I not understanding?

Great job Shawn!! It seems that the A12 cleaner wax really brings the clarity out of the paint.

How much did you sand? I'd be afraid to do that without a paint meter.

          Very nice and amazing turnaround.

What was your process in the door handle pockets on the exterior? They looked ravaged by dracula finger nails.

            Thanks!

Clay picks up dirt that is above the clear coat while the cleaner/wax brings up dirt that is imbedded in the pores of the clear coat.

This car has never been waxed and therefore dirt has had plenty of time to become imbedded into the pores of the clear.

Thanks Marc! I really like A12.

I didn't sand a whole lot on the hood but a decent amount on the bumper. I was confident that I wasn't going too far since I wasn't using all that much pressure and not doing too many passes.

            Thanks David!

I used a microfiber towel, M105 and elbow grease. Worked very nicely to remove the majority of the scratches from inside the door handles.

Some people should not own black cars!

That's what happens when you never wax your car.

                      Thanks!

I used a 3M sanding block which is really big and easy to hold. It also has spaces to put the sandpaper so that it stays in place during sanding.

Then, I wet the surface using Optimum No Rinse at quick detailer ratio (8 oz/gallon) and then liberally spray the sandpaper (2000 grit).

Then, I rub the sandpaper in one direction on the surface about 4 strokes (1 stroke= up and down) and then wipe off with a microfiber to inspect if the scratch was removed.

Repeat until the scratch is removed or until I feel I have gone into the clear coat far enough.

                      Hope that helps!
