  • 2006 Black CTS-V - HEAVY swirl correction

This car was easily the most frustrating car I have worked on. I brought 5 different polishes and 6 different pads and tried countless combinations attempting to get the best results.

The car is a 4.5 year old daily driver and had the swirls to show it, but the owner was ready to get it cleaned up and start as fresh as possible. After 8 hours it looked like a different car and the owner was certainly happy.

    The process involved:

Full wash with CG Citrus Wash n Gloss with Autogeek Foamgun
Wheels were cleaned with CG Wheel Cleaner
Claymagic Claybar on all exterior surfaces
Polished entire car with M105 Compound on Flex DA with Yellow and Orange pads at speed 6
Finishing polish included D151, M205 and CG P40 Pro Polish on white and black pads at speed 5-6
CG Buttery Wet Wax was used to seal the finish and was applied via Flex on a blue pad at speed 3
Full wipedown with CG Acryllic Detail Spray
All exterior trim and wheel wells were dressed with CG Bare Bones
Tires were dressed with CG VRP Dressing

Interior was vacuumed and received a full wipedown

    Here are the results...enjoy

Oh, I forgot to add that I also used SIP on a few areas.

From one panel to the next this car was driving me insane...nothing was working consistantly.

So overall... SIP and M105 were used as my first stage polishes and then M205, D151 and Chemical Guys P40 Pro Polish were used as finishing polishes.

I actually even used M105 on one of the panels on a Black Pad as a finishing polish.

Let me tell ya...I was frustrated like nobodies business, but I was very glad I finally got it to turn out.

Great job. The paint looks fantastic. What clarity and depth. Looks wet. Great work.

Thanks Marc...I told him to wrap his car up, leave it in the garage, and only use it as a talking piece now that it's so clean :P

Black cars look GREAT when they're clean, but it's really tough to keep em that way.

Yea GM paints can be a pain and sometimes you need more cut then a Flex is giving you. I was experimenting on a 2002 Firebird Formula hatch which is a Light Pewter Met. It was used and was a replacement for a 8 sec drag car hatch. So trying different LC pads and primarily M105/205 on a Mikita Rotary (9227c) and between RPM of the buffer, pad, chemical, pressure, and arm speed I got different results.

Seemingly the best was LC Orange pad (most cut pad I had aside from wool), with M105 to start, 1500 rpms, med to slow arm speed, little to low pressure and consistand passes, Then wipe, inspect, then go down to the White pad and 205, 1400 rpms, same arm speed. Wipe, and then same pad/chem and slow down the rpm and arm speed and really brought out the paint correction.

Car looks really good and I would say the same, put it away!!

Where there any chips in the paint ? And how did you tackle getting the compund out of all the road rash? Personally this is the biggest pain for me when working on black

I spy some heavy orange peel on some of the panels of that car, if my eyes do serve me correct. Although, your work on this car is AMAZING! My paint is just as bad on my 2001 Mazda Millenia, and I'm needing a SEVERE detailing to be done PRONTO!

All GM paint has orange peel. It is what it is, unfortunately.

I have never run into a problem with compound not coming out of road rash or chips on dark colored cars. Don't let the compound dry up and it's not a problem. If it does dry up, just spray some detail spray on it and wipe it up with a microfiber that has a long nap

I completely agree, often when guys gets hoods repainted, the shope does too good of a job and it looks "off" since they did not do the whole car.
