  • F150 Trim repaint!

Picked up the idea from a thread by Andrew C. about repainting trim with krylon fusion, and took up a project this weekend. Ended up painting the plastic pieces in front of the windshield, the wiper arms, and the grill. Turned out awesome and I love the aggressive look the black grill gives to it.

    All done:

    BOLD!

    Anyone love techwax?

    Love it

Thanks for looking and thanks for the idea andrew! (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/sho...=krylon+fusion)

Your going to have to maintain it with something in order for it too stay like that.

You might try Exterior Trim Detailer, at least for the front grille. You might be able to find it locally - there is a PepBoys near me that sells it for around $6 or $7. A nice product, very easy to use.

That will work fine for the grill, but use this on the cowl area:

I have detailed a lot of F-150s and every single cowl piece is faded and just looks plain terrible. Im sure you can keep it looking great by using ASD.

Its my go-to product for tires and trim

Anytime cameraman! It looks great! I'll have to get some pictures up of mine right now, it looks the same as it did the first day that I painted it and that was 4 Months Ago!

Tuck the whole reason for painting a cowl like this is to not have to maintain it with any sort of dressing. The cowl initially faded because it was the plastic that was fading (the plastic is not some other color that is painted, but it is rather a black plastic) So when you go ahead and use a glossy plastic adhering paint such as Krylon Fusion for plastics, it makes the plastic look better than new again plus it eliminates the step of having to dress it because it is paint.

While after years, the paint may start to fade, it isn't going to be anything near what OEM black plastics do.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

              I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
              Remove swirls my friends.

Wow, your cowl area has stayed the same and its been four months, no dressings or anything?

I might have to convince some of my customers to get this done, or perhaps I will just do it for them.

Thanks for the info, I though it would just fade after a couple weeks or a month.

I won't be able to get pictures up for a few weeks or so, but I swear I'll eventually get them up. It has held up amazingly well!

Once the F150 trim is naturally faded, dressing doesn't help revive its natural state at all just because of the fact that plastics are not very porous, so it is just the appearance of the dressing on the outside of the plastic.

In the original thread, MP said that for some painting is a better alternative for some, where dressing is better for others.

I would never do this on a customer though just because I would be too scared to take apart their car, but go ahead and give it a try and let us know! (Make sure you get the right paint or it won't work properly)
