  • My 2007 Honda S2000

My victim: my 2007 black Honda S2000, affectionately named "Luthien." Readers of the tales of J.R.R. Tolkien will recognize the name.

I attended to the interior detail during the week preceding. Products used:

    M40 Vinyl & Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner
    Gold Class Leather & Conditioner
Shin-Etsu silicone grease (for the rubber body seals)
    Quick Interior Detailer

The exterior detail, executed this weekend, did not go quite as planned. I had hoped that I would be able to do a full exterior detail, including paint correction with my D/A polisher, attempting to employ everything I have learned from MOL. Unfortunately, my new polisher died within the first five minutes of polishing, so I had to move to plan B. But I had no plan B. What a bummer!

After I got over the misery and depression, I decided that I would finally try the M07 polish that's been sitting on my shelf the past two months.

    Products used:

    Turtle Ice Car Wash
Raggtopp Fabric/Vinyl Cleaner (for the vinyl convertible top)
    Gold Class All Wheel Cleaner
Hot Rims Chrome Polish (for the exhaust tips)
    Meguiar's Detailing Clay (consumer line)
M105 (attempted spot scratch and mar removal, applied by hand)
    M07 Show Car Glaze
    PlastX (front and rear lights)
NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0 (two coats)
    Gold Class Trim Detailer
    Stoner's Invisible Glass
    Hot Shine Tire Gel

I must say that I really enjoyed #7. I had been hesitant to use it, after reading of the difficulties some have experienced in removing it; but I had no problems, thanks largely to the instruction given by Mike Phillips in an Autopia article.

Even without the machine polishing, I spent at least ten hours on the exterior detail. I do not know if the results meet up to MOL standards, but I am certainly happy. I confess that I simply enjoy the process of detailing. Someone here on MOL described detailing as his zen experience. I agree. Perhaps someone should write a book on detailing spirituality.

Please take a look at the pics. I regret I was not able to attempt the removal of the many swirls ... but alas, it was not to be. But I did as well as I could. I welcome all suggestions for improvement! --Al

Yikes! You got those results by hand? If only we could mass produce a tool named "Akimel" we would have a winner on our hands!

Solid work, I would have never guessed you didn't machine polish that bad boy...

Tell me what one you would like as a new Avatar and I'll get it set up later today (working on the Liberty right now).

        Very nice work!!

Awesome job, don't see a swirl in sight! Did you use the #105 by hand on the entire car, or just on spots? If you used it for the whole car, how did that go? it obviously left a heck of a luster

Of course you don't see the swirls. I hid all the uncomplimentary evidence!

I used the #105 only on specific spots. I was assuming I would be going over the entire car with #80. Alas, it appears that swirl and scratch correction will have to wait until next spring.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words.

Why not go over the whole car by hand now with #105 to knock out the swirls?

If I knock out the swirls by hand, my new replacement D/A will feel lonely and unappreciated. Even mechanical polishers need a reason for existence.

                            Akimel,

I have a 2006 Honda s2000 Berlina Black. What's your take on using Meguiar's Swirl X on the paint? I see that you did the whole car by hand (amazing)! Can you shed some light on the technique for applying the polisher by hand - does it have to be a circular motion even in the small areas?
