  • Clio Winter Cleaning

Time off from uni has given me the chance to get the car cleaned up, although this was spread over two weeks as it was a bit of a state from the salty roads. The first job was the wheels and wheel arches. The car was jacked up and wheels removed cleaned the plastics and paint with sponges and Gold Class Car Shampoo, same goes for the alloys from back to front. It was a job that was not helped by the near freezing temperatures not perfect but close to. then it was onto the whole car with the grit guard, micro fibre wash mitt and the GC shampoo.
(sorry about some of the pics not sure whats up with the camera)

    Befores:

Into the Garage Where its slightly warmer:

    Clean Again:

    The Next Week
This was to be a simple wax but, it took all day, I have noticed little spots of something on the paint and as an assumption mainly on the nearside rear of the car but also in others places. If anyone can help from the pictures I would be grateful as it is some stubborn stuff. It appears like a clear speck, I can be removed by fingernail so is on the surface,

Any Ideas What This Could Be? :

    #80 test patch

seems to have gone but only slightly

I started out with a test section and #80 with a polishing pad (PC) this seemed to work overall was not the solution. The car had not been Quik Clayed in a good year or so. It worked but was time consuming an didn’t completely remove it consistently across the car (although its looking much better). Then back to the PC when the lower half below the side rubbing strip was worked with #83 (sorry should have taken some pics) and polishing pad as had swirls bad swirls (ovals not circles, maybe it bad washing technique or hedges or automatic car washes that the previous owner may have subjected it to.) Then onto #80 for the entire car and finish with Gold Class Liquid Wax. Tyres coated with Hot Shine. Trim and Rubbers. GC Trim Detailer.

    Afters;

    Thanx Christian

Nice job. Looks great. The specs on your paint might be hard water spots.

              Re: Clio Winter Cleaning

Thanks for all the kind words and advice. the UK megs forum think it could be tree sap but its not really left near trees. i have had problems with water spots on the rear spoiler before when i washed the car one very hot summers day (in the shade).

What would be your advice on water spots i know little about them or how to shift them. i have a good selection of stuff to try but will get anything new if needs be (only the best for this car).

I like the idea of using a good picture when i sell it, will just have to make sure its up to the same standard at the time. i really wanted a black one but this was a one owner low mileage car, its 2003 (12,000 miles in 2005 and only 34,000 now in 2008, oh five years old think I'm ready for a newer car when i have time to look) but didn't know about defect removal at the time and they were as a rule they don't get looked after very well.

              Thanx Christian

Those spots look like tree sap to me too, the trouble with sap is that it's often airborne so you don't have to park under a tree to get contaminated with it, driving past is enough. The car looks great, what do you use to dress your plastics?

                  Re: Clio Winter Cleaning

I have used a combination of things for the rubbers i started out with:
Meguiars Gold Class Trim Detailer For all the plastics and rubbers.
The plastics of our older cars and have done mine sometimes get a coat of Sonus Total Eclipse SPF40 UV Surface Protection which came free with my order from autopia when i got my PC it a good product but more suited to rubber than plastic im my opinion.
The wheel arch liners are one of the last jobs i do so use Car Plan Original Black Spray (if u get Car Plan there?) it just really simple and quick and looks great and really last in summer.

                    Re: Clio Winter Cleaning

Excellent, thank you. I'm from the UK so should have no problem getting those bits. I have a 53 plate Clio in the same colour and before now I have used the endurence tyre shine on the plastics which looks great but after some wet weather tends to leave streaks down the paint work. I will order some trim detailer and see how it goes.
