It helps to have a uniform color when you start laying down the Rustoleum. The rustoleum is thinned out to the consistency of milk, so the coats are really thin. You can get full coverage after 3 coats if you start with a solid base color. You should put on at least 6 coats, wetsanding every other coat with progressively finer paper. To finish up, I'd put on 3 coats before the final sanding with 1000 then 2000 grit.
My 17 year-old Civic has horrible clear coat failure on the horizontal surfaces (roof and trunk) but the car is worth only $1200 max. So I really don't want to spend even $300 to get the bargain basement paint job from Maaco or Earl Scheib.
The one problem I foresee is color matching. The car is teal green. I guess a good paint store can do a decent job of color matching if I could provide them with a sample ( I could detach a mirror). The other problems would be finding the time and having to do this without benefit of a garage.

You know, when you consider that fact that using a roller to apply the paint means you're putting down quite a bit, then you wet sand it totally flat and buff it out, it's really not a huge surprise that this can work as well as it does. But since rolled on Rustoleum isn't normally buffed out like this, we don't generally think about the possibilities!

Got some sun shots at the car show yesterday:
You can see a little hologramming - I rushed the finishing process to get the hood back on for the show. I'll go back after the paint has cured a bit longer and 205 it

Years ago Ive seen a Checker Cab that was restored and it was painted the rustoleum roller method, and it looked very good. It was very shiny with no orange peel.
