Re: Wheel Brightener: First Use Review

I'm quite surprised by the lack of mention of the absolute danger associated with this product.

Before I go further, let me say, as a Professional Detailer, that I am a volume user of many Mequiar's products. I like the company for many reasons, and I applaud their efforts to educate consumers.

Now, to the point. Wheel Brightener contains Ammonium Bifluoride. When this formulation contacts water it becomes Ammonium Fluoride, NH4F and hydrofluoric acid ,HF. The HF content of the resulting solution will be ~ 33% of the original Ammonium Bifluoride and; if at the salt's solubility limit of ~ 40%, the HF content will be ~ 13%. . . very corrosive, toxic and hazardous.

Since the label suggests 1 part WB and 4 parts water, it becomes HF as soon as it leaves the bottle.

The special nature of the reaction of the fluoride ion with calcium in human tissue requires immediate, often heroic measures to save digits, limbs and even lives.

Be sure that you are using personal protective equipment that has been shown to effectively protect against Hydrofluoric Acid exposure. Always double check your personal protective equipment before each use of HF. A pinhole in a glove or leaky container can cause an accident you really want to avoid at all costs. HF burns penetrate deeply into skin and muscle tissue and can't be treated by simply flushing the area with water.

Sorry to sound so serious, but it is serious. Please be aware of the MSDS for all of the products you use. Wheel Brightener MSDS Link

          +1 with Jimmy Buffit.

The product works very excellent but extra care need to be taken. Wear proper gloves (chem resistant) and most important, goggles to protect your eyes. I using those white/clear transparent ones; saved me from WB's splatter so many times.

if possible make sure you're spraying it when there is no sudden gusts of wind or breeze, you dont want that stuff in your nose and lungs.

Re: Wheel Brightener: First Use Review

I've had WB in my eyes, nose, mouth, and on my skin. It doesn't bother me one bit. Not sure why everybody is so scared of it? I enjoy being outside washing my car...I'm not going to go out like I'm visiting a Haz-Mat scene.

Im a huge fan of the Wheel Brightner. It just lifts the brake dust off and leaves a nice shine. Been successful using it on all different types of wheels.

I never understood the purpose of a wheel cleaner. Especially if it's so strong. Why not use the same wash you wash your vehicle with?

With some of the wheels I've worked on there's no way a regular wash is going to remove the garbage on them and that's where WB come into play. With well looked after wheels I do use my regular wash.
