A good shake certainly wouldn't hurt, unless you shake it so hard the head of the duster flies off.

Seriously, CCD and OXO claim that the dirtier their dusters get, the better they work! So don't be afraid of a little dirt on them. Just don't glide them over bird "residue."

I hit it on my hand a couple of times before and after I use it to knock some dust out (this really does work, my hand has turned dark brown before), I also shake it mildly while using it to help get some of the "fresh" dust off of it.
