  • Super Thick Natural Chamois X-2100 ~ Review

On to another drying method, Meguiars Super Thick Natural Chamois.

    First Impressions:
Its packaged in some simple cardboard, and it serves its purpose.

Its rather soft with a unique smell and an odd shape, it is a natural chamois. Wasn't sure what to expect with this as I have never used the same type of product but I was excited. Really feels like a quality product!

    Application/Use:
After a wash with Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo & Conditioner I ran my hose without a nozzle to help sheet the water off. Then I moved on to the towel to dry.

    Overall Impression:
I waited to post this after I gave the towel a fair shot (three tries), two on my truck and one on my gf's Monte Carlo. All provided the same results. I even let my girlfriend try it she didn't like it all that well either, kept saying "This isn't drying the car". I gave in and tossed her a Water Magnet.

This performed similar to the Microfiber Super Suede Drying Towel with the edge going to the SS Drying Towel.

The chamois didn't glide over the surface as well as I like. The towel didn't seem to absorb water fast enough it smeared most of the water. Especially on a non waxed surface like the Monte.

So I tired to blot my vehicle dry (as suggested by another MOL member). It did seem to work better with the blot method but this method can be time consuming and still wasn't up to par.

I did notice, at first the water seemed to sheet off the chamois when I tried to soak it prior to use, as the package says. But it did start to absorb the water.

Similar to the SS Drying towel this seemed to work best on my vinyl bed cover/plastic trim and windows.

To be honest $15.99 is too much for the performance that I had. For that price or just a little more you can pick 2 Water Magnets!

Once you have tried a Water Magnet there is no turning back!

If anyone has any tips on using a natural chamois post them and I will give it another try and post an update.

    Two for the chamois

    Hey Brian
I have noticed the more you use the Natural Chamois, the better it performs. Try leaving it in a bucket of clean water sealed by a bucket boss seat over night. Additional, pulling the chamois over the surface, rather than pushing it like you might do with the Water Magnet will yield better results.

In spite of what the directions state on the Super Suede Drying towel, I have washed mine with my other Micro Fiber towels (Tide- no fabric softener or bleach in hot water) and the towel is performing SWEET now. It seems as if the towel is treated with something initially that does not allow it to absorb to its full potential. After washing 2-3 times, I think I may like it better than the Water Magnet.

Give it a try and let me know what you think

The chamois I used seemed to leave a film behind on my black truck.

The water magnet is tough to beat.

I used the Super Thick Natural Chamois 5 Sq Ft for the frst time this evening. It worked like a chamois -- That is it left some water behind. When I dried my black Hemi and my wife's silver Tacoma, I dried one section at a time with the chamois and followed it with a small waffle weave microfiber towel . I do the same thing when I use the Water magnet. I always use two towels when I dry my vehicles.

While I do prefer the Water Magnet to the Natural Chamois, I plan to use the chamois for the next few washes.

I think that it's great the Meguiar's offers the variety of accessories that that do. We all have different preferences. I haven't used a chamois for over twenty years. I've been a "cotton towel guy" because an old detailer told me that chamois remove wax. Truth or fiction?

I was wondering the same thing about pulling wax off the paint. Maybe that is why some of the others said to blot. That would be less likely to pull wax off the paint.

I went back to two of my old detailing books to see what the "oldtimers" had to say about using a chamois for drying. 1988 and 1991copyrights -- this was way before detailing forums.

One of the books states, "... Carpeople (I guess that means us.) seldom use a chamois. They found that it streaks and holds grit and dirt particles. They prefer large fluffy towels..."

The other book suggests a two step drying process in which a chamois may be used -- "... a quick first drying with a chamois to get rid of most of the water, followed by a final drying with soft terry-cloth towels to thoroughly eliminate all streaks..." This book goes on to suggest that you may just want to use a lot of towels.

Perhaps the directions on the chamois package should suggest a followup drying procedure using a cotton terry-cloth or microfiber towel. (Good idea, right?)

I knew there was a reason for me not using a chamois for over twenty years. I'll still give the new Meguiar's chamois another couple of tries. But I know it will not replace the Water Magnet or a more expensive "large blue" waffleweave that I purchased earlier this spring.

That pretty much sums it up right there.

It isn’t meant to be some amazing new development. It’s exactly what it is, a natural chamois. And it’s a darn good one too; as good as you’ll find anywhere. If you’re a die-hard natural chamois devotee you’ll love it.

If you’re not that’s ok they have plenty of other great products for you.

These split-skin sheep hides are tanned with oil to make them soft. I recall using many chamois over the years and that they would perform better after several uses. When they become dry and hard they would tend to crack and need to be re-oiled. This can be done by lightly misting a fine spray of vegetable oil on it and seal it in a baggy for a couple days, wash thoroughly to remove the excess oil and it's good to go again,

I used to pull the chamois as well. I'd use the chamois to remove the bulk of the water then buff dry with a plush towel.

I haven't used a chamois in a few years since I found that mf towels do a better job of absorbing water.

Maybe I'll give a chamois a try again just to see how they compare.
