  • What to use on chrome door handle?

    Hi,

I have a brand new FIAT 500, and the door handler is chromed. Not sure if its real chromed or just painted plastic.
The thing is that it already have some corrosion spots and water marks.

I wonder what I should use on it. Wax? Metal Polisher? Ultimate Black?

    Take a look:

If I should use metal polish, which one? All Metal Polish, Hot Rims Chrome Polish or Medium Cut Metal Polish.

But I really think its not real metal.

The wax I have is NXT Generation 2.0. Would that be appropriate?

I have used steel wool too, but I used #0000, and I agree its the best chrome cleaner I've ever used!... But not on fake chrome, I would imagine it would scratch/ruin fake chrome

I'd be willing to bet it's plastic chrome. Don't use any product with any appreciable abrasive content, or you'll instill scratches that will be near impossible to remove. There have been quite a few previous posts from those with similar issues on their plastic-chromed wheels and wheel covers with irreversible damage. Any of the cleaner waxes, such as A6, D151 or Color-X are worth a try, but definitely stay away from steel wool on plastic chrome.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I can imagine that steel wool will ruin everything.

I have wax (NXT Generation) and cleaner (Interior Detailer).

Ok, I just did it and it doesn't work. The Interior Quik Detailer removed the water spots but not the corrosion points. The wax didnt do much.
I need something to remove those corrosion points. Please help.

I have a chrome cleaner that I have used and have great results.

Your not going to get anything clean with NXT or QID. What some of the guys were sating is an actual "cleaner wax" not a cleaner and a wax. If you have a chrome cleaner try that.

I heard in the club of my car (FIAT 500) that someone use Mothers Chrome Polish without any problems. This product is also good to clean and protect mirrors.
I wonder a while ago why there is no product to protect mirrors.

Would HOT RIMS CHROME POLISH do all of that?

I would not try a chrome polish on the door handles unless you are 100% sure they are real chrome. I would try a good cleaner wax on it first. In addition, how old is the car? If it is brand new I would at least let the dealer know how the car was delivered

u can only use light polish or cleaner wax on plastic chrome because usually the chrome on plastic is very thin

It's hard to tell too much from your pic of the handle, but a little research shows replacement oem handles for your car which look like chrome plated metal handles. The pics I saw were of disassembled handles with back and front pics.

In any case, I'd start with something like ultimate compound on a soft foam pad and work it in well. It should remove the marks after an application or two. What you've tried so far is very weak and I wouldn't expect it to remove the marks you have.

I have plastic chrome on my car and I've buffed it with a da polisher and M105 and it hasn't done anything but improve the appearance. If your handles are chrome plated metal, or even plastic chrome you will have no issues whatsoever using a hand application of ultimate compound. Just use a foam hand pad to apply and a soft microfibre cloth to remove any remaining ultimate compound residue.

You can wax the handles afterwards to add a protective coating which should help to prevent this happening again, and add a little more shine.
