  • XRDAD - another 'shiny' Canadian

    Hello all!

New to your forum and looking forward to reading through the how to's and demos and answers.. and and and..

I have a specific question and will share that in the appropriate thread, but thought I'd be do the intro thing first.. so here I am!

Early 40's, shiny head, overweight and slow.. But I like working so it all works out. I drive junk but try to keep it clean. Just finished an autobody course here in Toronto and looking forward to trying my new skills on a helpless victim (my del Sol). And once I pay someone to do it right, I'll need to either pay someone to make it shine or get off my lazy butt and do it myself.

Seriously, a big fan of the products here. Worked for GM a number of years ago and Meguiar's was bottled with a GM label. That's where I first learned. Followed some youtube videos and read about your classes, very jealous that it's not offered here. I use the 5 step process now, and clay bar my toys. I have angle grinders/polishers, orbital polishers, micro fiber towels and terry cloths.. but I'm afraid to use any of them because I never had anyone to show me the right way.

That's it for now, and what I've explained will lead me into my question.. just gotta find the right thread now..

    Thanks!

        Well,

the weather is not so good and my garage is still really just a theory.. there's so much junk on the floor, I can't hardly walk in there!
But, I got most of the pieces I need to start organizing things. Which got me to thinking about my cleaning solutions.

I'm quietly, slowly shopping for the equipment I still want (a g110v2).. but I'm a little lost on what I should get to start?
When looking at the 'kits' that you can get with the DA, there are so many options! Well, except for the one that I wanted... ADS doesn't ship to Canada

Anyway, can someone please share their opinion on what DA kit would be best suited for the weekend guy, working mostly on his own stuff and for some family/friends?

BTW, haven't talked to anybody at Meguiar's Canada yet.. I'll let you know if something comes out of it.

I'll also have to watch the FS thread after this... RPPM had lots of interesting stuff to sell, but I didn't know what to ask for.

Re: XRDAD - another 'shiny' Canadian

For a starter kit, even if you put it together yourself, we'd recommend the following basics:
            • G110v2 (it comes with the W68DA backing plate)
            • W8207 Soft Buff 2.0 foam polishing pads - 4
            • W9207 Soft Buff 2.0 foam finishing pads - 3
            • G17216 Ultimate Compound
            • G19216 Ultimate Polish - or - M205 Ultra Finishing Polish
            • G12718 NXT Tech Wax 2.0 - or - G18216 Ultimate Wax
            • G13616 Quik Interior Detailer
            • M40 Vinyl & Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner
            • G15524 Endurance Tire Spray (trigger)
            • G18516 Gold Class Leather & Vinyl Cleaner and G18616 Gold Class Leather Conditioner (if you have leather interior, of course)
            • G9524 Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner (assuming you have factory OEM wheels on your vehicles)
            • Gold Class Car Wash
            • X3002 Microfiber Wash Mitt
            • X2000 Water Magnet waffle weave microfiber drying towel - 2
            • X2020 Supreme Shine microfiber towels 3 pack - as many as you can; there's no such thing as too many microfiber towels

Re: XRDAD - another 'shiny' Canadian

You really just need to keep it simple.

If your cars are in good shape, you wont need to get too much.

              Soap - Gold Class, etc
Clay - Smooth Surface Clay kit, or Mild Pro-Line clay
RO Polisher - G110v2 or similar
Polishing pads - Meguiars is good, Lake County is also popular.
              Finishing Pads - Same
Strong Cleaner - Ult. Compound is good for DA use.
Mild/Polish Cleaner - Something like #205, SwirlX, Ult. Polish
Maybe a cleaner/wax for quick details - ColorX or #66
Wax - Your favorite wax, maybe Nxt 2.0, Ult. Wax, Gold Class+
              MF Towels
              Smooth Foam Hand Applicators

Of course you can get more and more... but that is really the whole list for doing basic work.

You might look into autogeek as well, not sure where they ship to.

Re: XRDAD - another 'shiny' Canadian

If you live near the US border, i'd look for a parcel receiving service.
Most of the Vancouver people I know use a parcel service in either Point Roberts Wa or Blaine Wa.
Most of the time Customs just waves me thru. I buy stuff from AG & ADS all the time.....i have more than $1000 worth of Megs/ detailing stuff and I don't even detail for $$$...lol. But my vehicles look brand new

Re: XRDAD - another 'shiny' Canadian

I use Detailing.com, They know how to package it and ship to Canada, I have never had to pay any duty or have had any problem with them, and I do buy a lot
If you don't want to go throughout the hassle of ordering from the us you can try Auto obsessed , but they don't have a lot of Meguiars, and they do carry a lot of other products. and fully stocked, I buy my Swissvax from them.
Any of them should give you a discount if your buying that much stuff.

Thanks for the advice! Picked up some MF towel and waffle weave towels today.. got a few bucks from selling tools I'm done with, saving up for a DA. If anybody has a deal on a gently used one....

                      G'day!

Well, I think I will finally have the money saved up for a DA kit.
Considering my experience and goals, would you recommend the Ultra polish kit or something else?
Thank you for choosing Autopia Car Care for all your auto detailing needs. Autopia Car Care is home to the best car wax, car polishes, and detailing supplies available

My thinking is to add http://www.autopia-carcare.com/megui...ff-pads-3.html (all 3 types), a pad brush and a couple of grit guards. We have the clay kits here, but I'll review the posts about the them to decide where to buy from.

Also, I have some other stuff I want from the US and will likely end up driving down there to pick it all up at once. Anyone know if the kit will be duty free?

                      Any.. ANY advice is appreciated.
Looking forward to testing out some new stuff and getting an amateur class started for my motorcycle group!!!
