I'm in the market for a new car and these are the two i'm looking at. I think i'm leaning towards the GTO though. Anyone here have any comments on either?

Two different approaches to speed
Personally, the GTO gets my vote every time. I like the big V-8 sound in a RWD vehicle.
The engine in the GTO lends itself to modifications.
Every owner I've spoken with says the car grows on you. Obviously, no one forced them to buy, but they say it gets even more comfortable and pleasurable to drive as they days pass.See the big picture, enjoy the details

I highly recommend the GTO! Where else can you get 400HP for the low 30s? If you like torque, this is your car! It makes a much better daily driver than the WS6 TA I had. The TA had the looks though. The GTO rides better and has a more comfortable interior. The exhaust sounds better and there is more bottom end torque than the TA.
The hood scoops and split exhaust pipes make it look a little more aggressive than the '04. The cops don't pay much attention to me, and I drive this car just as fast as my TA. If you get the WRX, the cops will scrutinize you very closely. The WRX is a nice car, but I prefer the GTO.
And there's nothing wrong with an Australian car! The workmanship is much better than most American cars in its price range.
I like the Camaro and Challenger concept cars but they won't be available until 2009, and that's if they decide to make them. The Challenger BTW, hardly looks original. It looks exactly like the one from the previous generation. Nothing wrong with that, but it is not original.
Drive a GTO and you'll be hooked!

I test drove the '05 GTO a couple months back...wow!!!!! I fell in love!!!!! It's built well, handles firm but not punishing and has a nice and VERY comfortable interior (coming from a guy who's 6' 4" and nothing is comfortable!) It's very well-mannered and sophisticated; not raw like the f-body.
It won't win any awards in the eye-catching category...but that may be what you want! I don't like having a gaudy car that gets attention because I'm not out to impress anyone. Also, I had a '91 Firebird Formula and the cops liked to follow me!"Do the job right, or don't do it!" - Dad

hey hotrodguy,
It all depends on what you want from the car and your personnal style. I agree for the price you cant beat the GTO performance wise. Some simple bolt ons and this car is made into a monster, but it is rear wheel drive. STI is 300hp,300ft lbs torque 2.5 liter at about 2 to 5 k more. All wheel drive, 6 speed, dccd center dif, brembo brakes, 17inch bbs rims BIG WING(HAHA).I don't know about the GTO but the only draw back I can see about the STi is the fact that it NEEDS PREMIUM gas no matter what. As you can see from my screen name I have a wrx non STI and I can say I drive it like i stole it on a regular basis and in the 41/2 years of ownership I have never been pulled over and I even have an attention getting borla cat back exhuast and all I get is looks and no tickets. Don't get me wrong I don't street race or go way over the speed limit(maybe 5-10 over at times) .If you like the high tech route to makeing you car very fast STI would be a great choice. easy horse power and performance GTO it would be. But to me nothing beats waking someone up at a light when you chirp all four and get 2-4 cars on them from a dig rain or shine.

Im an American Muscle guy all the way.
but hooking all 4 tires pumping out 300Hp is something you can't beat, plus with available aftermarket products you can pop the STi over 500Hp.
if your looking for a cheap alternative go with the Neon SRT4

lol even though the GTO is ugly BUT all people will see is the backbut :i think scoobys are probably funner to tune just because its an import ... i saw a first gen STI with 1200hp lol but its 1/4 mile was only 9.7
the new STI is also ultra ugly i has that horrific nose cone from the B9 trebeca so i think go for a GTO!
i would like to see a race between them 1/4 mile, on an oval and last but not least drifting out!
RamAirV1 is right thought the cops will look to get imports because spoiled kids my age buy an STi tune it to the max and then race anything thats willing to race the GTO on the other hand is not a car that you will see in a high school parking lotPatrick Yu

I have seen plenty of spoiled kids driving everything from EVO 8 MR's, STi's GTO's Cobra Mustangs, and Corvette's. Just because it is an import doesn't mean they are only bought by spoiled kids. Domestic muscle is also high on the spoiled kid list of MOMMYDADDYIWantItAndHaveToHaveItNowitis.2013 Race Red F-150 SCREW

Hey Scott,
I have driven both cars. For a daily driver, I really liked the GTO. I have only driven the one with the LS2, 6 speed. I was very impressed with how comfortable it was to drive around. Had a good amount of power and was fun. Wasn't that impressed when it came time to turn the car, but that can easily be fixed. Also I think the car is more classy than the sti. Just more civilized.
I also have driven the Sti. Ok for a daily driver. I really do not like the gearbox. Had a good amount of power once you got on it. Quick reeving. However, personally not a fan of turbo cars. Handling on the car was good. Even better once I figured out how to pull at the power I could to the back tires. Four doors is nice.
Really depends on what you plan to use it for.
If it were me, I would go with the GTO.

I'm sold on the GTO, I initially had the G35C, Evo, STI, TRailblazer SS on my list. The Evo and STI are both real fun to drive, but they are what they are, I need something w/ some luxury and speed. The GTO definately dissapoints me in the handling dept, but I'll quickly fix that. There is just something about the LS2 that makes me giggle, having that power on all the time is a blast.
That said, the STI is still a very very very cool car, and I will most likely pick one up used in a year or two and make it a dedicated race car. But for now, it'll be leather bucket seats a T56 in my grip and tire smoke blowing out the rear end
BTW, what amazes me most about the GTO is the fit and finish, it is equal if not above the G35C IMO (btw, talk about a boring car to drive, the infiniti almost put me to sleep)
Superior, I agree, it's not a looker, but then again, neither was the STIChopped 55 Suburban
