  • Detailing a 1979 vehicle

    In the past, I have always detailed my newer vehicles (2001 and newer). I have also attended Meguiar's Thursday Night Open Garage in Irvine, CA, where I learned the proper process of detailing with some of Meguiar's different products. Having said that, I am looking for some advice in detailing a 1979 vehicle which I am going to acquire. I am assuming the paint process or paint/coating makeup today is different than the paint process or paint/coating makeup in the late 70s. So, my question is - Do I need to do anything different than what I would normally do on a newer vehicle?

    The single owner of the car (my father) has had the car garaged its entire life, and really has not been driven for the past 25 years. To the best of my knowledge, the car has never been professionally detailed. Right now, my plan of attack (after washing and clay bar) is to use Ultimate Compound with a red pad, followed by Ultimate Polish with a yellow pad, followed by a wax or sealant with a black pad.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    What type of car is it? Some were finished with lacquer and some were enamels and a few were the start of bc/cc.

        Ross, the link below is to a video of a near stock 1979 Chrysler 300. Not a Cordoba, yet similar. It might be worth a look if you need to see stickers or other old stock stuff;

        Here is a link to the AllPar site with some historical info. Unfortunately, no discussion of types of paint (other than colors).
