I have been a Mac user now for the past three years. I love it, but it can also be frustrating, given that most websites are geared for PC users. One of the challenges for me on MOL has been the manipulation of pictures. How do we re-size pictures to conform to the stipulated MOL size? How do we upload them? How do we insert them into articles and comments? Unfortunately, the various articles in the forum that address these questions are directed specifically to PC users. Well, we Macs may be an oppressed minority, but that doesn't mean that we can't do all the things that PCs can do, even if the PC world would have us believe otherwise.
Here is a process I have discovered through trial and error.
Re-sizing Images
How do we resize pictures and photographs? MOL suggests a maximum width of 800 pixels, but all the photos I take with my little digital camera are wider than that. How do I re-size them? It's simple.
Go into iPhoto and select the images that you will want to upload. You can select multiple images by clicking on them while holding down the Command key. If you want to select all the images in the folder, then key Command-A. Now click on "File" at the top of the screen. This will bring up a box with various options.
Scroll down and click on "Export." This will bring up another box.
Click "Scale images no larger than" and type 800 in the width box. The program will automatically calculate the proper height. Now click on "Export" in the lower right hand corner. iPhoto will now ask where you want to save the selected images. I find it easiest to save them on my Desktop.
Uploading images into the Meguiar's gallery
The process for Mac users is the same as for PC users: simply follow the directions given in the first part of this article: How to place an image in your messages.
When you have selected the images you want to upload, then click on the "Upload/Submit" button.
Click the "Process" button and you're set.
Inserting an image into an article or comment
The above cited article can take Mac users only so far. Go to Gallery|My Photos. Locate the thumbnail of the image you wish to insert into your article or comment. Click on it. If you hover your mouse pointer over the image and see the pointer change to a different animated pointer (for example, from an arrow to a hand), this means there is a larger image available. Click on the image. Here is where things get tricky for Mac users. The challenge is to correctly locate the image, so you can copy its location into your article or comment. Now I know what you are thinking. You are thinking: "This is easy! All I have to do is to hold down the Control key and click on the pic. I will then be presented with several menu options, including 'Copy link location.' All I have to do is to use this option." Wrong! This won't work. You are thinking PC. Go ahead and try it. You will find that it won't give you the location you need. What you need to find is where the image is saved in archive.meguiarsonline.com. Here is what you need to do:
After bringing up the larger image (if there is one), hold down the Control key and click on the image. When the menu pops up, click on ... taadaa ... "View Image." This will take you to the image you need. Once again, click on the image while holding down the Control key; when the menu pops up, choose "Copy Image Location." This will save the location to your clipboard. Now you are ready to insert the image into your article or comment.
You are composing yet another brilliant MOL post and want to insert an image you have uploaded into your gallery. You have followed the above steps and the image location is saved on your clipboard. To insert the image, find the in the Text Formatting Tools.
If you hover the mouse over this icon, it will say "Insert Image." Click on it. A box like this will pop up:
The moment of triumph is now at hand: simultaneously key Control-V (hold down the Control key and press the V key). This will copy the image location into the box. Click "OK." Voila! The image should now be included in your article/comment. If it's not ... well ... hmmm ... that's your punishment for following my instructions.
Good luck!
Cheers,
Al
