  • Two bucket system

I was thinking and had an idea. Wouldn't it be easier if Megs made a two bucket system on wheels? That way you would be able to drag it easily to any part of the car you're washing and it would have the two bucketsne for the dirty water and one for the clean water.

Grit Guard makes one..but its pretty spendy. I just pickup the buckets and move them..maybe twice during the entire wash...no wheels...which keeps them from rolling away or into the car..I think the wheels are overrated for what it takes to pickup the buckets and move them manually

Thanks, Aaron. We were just trying to do what we could to help out those in need after the fires. After all it could have been us then, us 3 years before that or in the near future. You never know...

My grandpa does some amazing work with wood, just to give you an idea, that entire dolly including the staining took less that 45 minutes to complete. It all dove tailed/rabbit tailed so nothing is coming out anytime soon. I'm not sure about the wood and stuff, I'll give him a call and see what we used and post back with the measurements incase anybody wants to build one.

Off to school for me though...

OK, I have to ask the n00b question.

Even with the 2 bucket system, aren't you still wiping dirty water on the car to some extent? It seems to me that there would be a system that would allow you to put clean soapy water on (hose or spray) that could be agitated with the washing mit & rinsed clean without re-dipping a sponge.

                    Re: Two bucket system

Well, putting the grit guards in your buckets helps. I have had my rinse water black and my soapy water nice and clear before.

But unless you refilled each bucket after each wipe with clean water, and put your sponge in the washing machine after each wipe, there is always some chance. Just a matter of minimizing as much as possible.

Now going to something like a foam gun would mean that no dirt gets in the soapy water, but you still are relying on the rinse water to get your sponge completly clean.

                      Re: Two bucket system

My first thought is that the ideal system would be an attachment for the hose (like a fertilizer dispenser) that would hold the wash & you could turn it on & get soapy water - wash an area with the mit - then turn the soap off & get clean rinse water to rinse the area of the car and the mit. Repeat.

I realize that this would be hard for mobile detailers because the water use would be much higher, but is that the only downside?

That's basically how I wash using my foam gun. First I give the car a good rinse to knock off any of the really loose stuff then I foam the whole car. I have one bucket, with a Grit Guard in place, that I use as my clear water rinse for my natural lambswool wash mitt. I then put mitt to car and do roughly a panel at a time, rinsing the mitt as needed and shooting a bit more foam as needed.

You can make the washing system as easy as you want or as complicated as you like, but sooner or later you have to 'touch' the paint to get it clean and then 'touch' the paint again to dry it.

The goal is always to do everything you can to reduce the potential for instilling swirls and scratches and as for the best way to do this everyone has to more or less figure out their own system.

We use the two bucket method on our Pilot and the Z but for my old work truck and the Mother-in-law's old Buick, they get the single bucket method because there's nothing really special about these last two vehicles.

As for complicating the process, you could stockpile wash mitts and only use a each wash mitt to make one pass on the paint and the put aside and grab a new wash mitt etc. etc. etc. Then after washing the car this way wash and dry the wash mitts for the next time you wash the car. You could probably get two wipes with each mitt using the two sides of the mitt.

Don't know if anyone would ever get this extreme but it's an option.

ok since im new to the detailing world i've been seeing a lot of this two bucket method, and it makes sense to me. but what i want to know is the correct order on how to do things. Is it:

                            1. Dip mit in soap bucket
                            2. wipe down car
                            3. Rinse off in dirty/rinsing bucket
                            4. Repeat

                            ???????

I would add step 0 – Pre-soak your car or truck to remove as much as you can but what you have is all there is until you want to dry things off. I can't remember where I saw thsi but there is a video of Mike P. doing this on a Mini where he includes one of the better ways to dry it off.

Mike, is that video still around?
