  • Pads Flying off of backing plate

    I have the megs backing plate and only use megs pads...my backing plate is fairly new with only about 15 uses..my problem is that when used with my PC at speeds above 4.5...pads will not stay attached to backing plate...HELP!!! sent two pads flying so far...and removeing grit from a pad full of product (megs products to boot) is not fun ...please advise..THANKS

    It also happened to me once... I've only used my G-100 with the backing plate on for like 4 detailing sessions... I would certainly appreciate the input on this one too..

    I agree man.. I had to wash the pad entirely and wait for it to dry... I had to wait and I didn't follow Meguiar's recommendation.. I had no choice...

      A good practice is to never lift the pad off the surface of the car until you have turned the polisher off. If you do this, the pads will fly off.

      If you think it's an issue with the Velcro, then call Customer Care at 1-800-347-5700 and explain what's happening. I'm sure they'll take care of you.

        Are you running the machine while it is not in contact with the surface? I have had a pad fly off but only when I ran the machine without contact.

          Because the dual action polisher spins at a very high speed when there is no pressure against the foam pad, if you lift the machine off the finish before turning it off, the motor will rev up very fast and the rotating action coupled with the oscillating action will tend to spin, or throw the foam pad off.

          At our Saturday Detailing Classes, I stress a number of times to be conscience of this at all times and to make it a habit of turning the polisher off before lifting the polisher off the surface.

          Most people make this mistake a couple of times when they are first starting out but after making the mistake a few times, they then remember and make it a habit.

            My pad flew off because I was trying to spin the imbeded product out of the saturated pad... So, it wasn't touching the surface at all.. Although I've done this for quite a while, there's just this one instance where it flew off...

              This works great with a rotary buffer, as in holding a nylon brush against the face of the pad while bringing the RPM's up, but when you try to do it with a dual action polisher, for most people, they are not going to be able to hold a nylon brush against the face of their pad while the polisher is oscillating and the result is the pad flies off.

                I've had pads come off many times. This is a frustrating situation. I've come to realize that meguiar's backing plates are of very poor design. Their loops are EXTREMELY small(or short) hence no grip on your pad.

                Meguiar's makes some great products but their backing plates are not one. I've asked a number of Meguiar's people about this and never have their recommendations solved this issue. I've moved on to using others plates. Plates with much taller loops. I've not had this problem since switching.

                As many in this forum will tell you it's advised to experiment and find what works.

                  Hey guys .I use a makita rotartry buff. I buy one back plate for each type pad.Changing both pad/plate. Seemed the more i changed the pads the weaker the hold. Have not thrown one since doing this.

                    I have an older backing plate from Meguiars, and I'm able to clean my pad with a nylon brush at 4 1/2 to 5 speed.

                    One thing that helps me is that I will spin the pad by hand to check and see if I applied it off center just a little before starting it up.

                      my trouble happens when pad is not "perfectly" flat against surface - pad will start to shift - then will fly off right after I lose contact with body of car..even slight contours are enough to "loosen" pad...I guess I should call cust. service?

                        Sounds like you may have a defective backing plate...I have not had much of a problem on contoured areas.
