  • Still seeing paint on the applicator

I have a black 2001 Lexus that I purchased used a few months ago. I'm new to all this but I read and studied the 5 step program and used it. Wow, I could not believe the results. We drive the car everyday and it is not gargage kept. So tonight I decided to clean the paint, polish and apply more Deep Crystal Wax. With each step I am seeing each applicator turn black. I thought this would not happen now given the fact that the paint system is clear coated. I don't see that I have an oxidation problem. So, do I really have a problem? Should I be concerned? Thanks.

Are you sure it is clearcoated?

How black is the applicator? Like dirty gray, or black?

The DC system is very mild. It is possible that the paint just needs more cleaning.

Did you clay at all as well?

Not this time. The paint was smooth so I elected to skip that step. The paint was beginning to haze a bit in places and Quik Detailer was not wiping off as it once did. Up to this point all the work done on the car has been by hand. I hope to get a DA in a couple months. Do you think feel it will clear up after I clean, polish and wax with a DA?

If the car is a 2001, clay it and we'll go from there.

Lexus still has a single stage black paint on the market today and may have a tinted clear as well (not 100% sure about that last one). So even though your car is a 2001 model and most folks would naturally assume a clear coat is present, don't be surprised to find your paint is indeed single stage.

Could be ss. But I think since you say it is dirty gray. I bet your paint is still dirty. Try claying it.

Thanks guys. I picked up a PC today so maybe between this and the clay I can clean it up.

                  Thanks again all!

I think its single stage. Do you get the same color from every panel?

Yes cnfowler, I did get the same greyish color from the hood and truck. I had to stop there because I ran out of day light. I'm thinking about contacting Lexus with my VIN and seeing what they can tell me. The information my be helpful in determining if I am working with a soft paint. This information could be very helpful for newbie like me when I'm ready to use the DA. Thanks again everyone.
