M105 question

Hello,

I have read quite a few threads on M105 and using it by hand and people having great results. I have tried scratchx by hand and had decent results(of course using alot of "passion" so to speak). I have recently tried M105 and had great results in "half" the time versus using scratch x. Well, i cannot justify buying a DA or a rotary at this time, but i do have one of those cheapie 6" orbital buffers. Everything i've heard and read says that these kind of orbitals cannot provide any paint correction because they don't have enough power.

Well if i can buff out scratches using M105 by hand, are there or could there be any ill effects using M105 with an orbital??

Goal: I am not looking for perfection but rather to remove as many fine scratches and swirls as possible without my arms wanting to fall off because of fatigue LOL.
Cars: 2004 Mazda 6 in black, and 2001 VW Jetta in black.
Current Supplies on hand:
-Plenty of MF towels, applicators, etc.
-Meguiars Deep Crystal Wash
-M Clay in mild
-M Ultimate Quick Detailer
-Eagle1 AtoZ tire/wheel cleaner
-M Scratch X
-M M105
-M M09 Swirl Remover 2.0(not sure why i have this)
-M M02 Fine Cut Cleaner(not sure why i have this)
-M Plast X
-M Polish system(bottles are like 3-4 years old, has the 3 step process)

What i need: I have about $40 to spare on products, OTC or any of Meguiars products as i'm lucky enough to have a distributor here in DFW.
-I know i need a wax, i'm thinking the NXT 2.0
-Should i buy any final polishes to use after M105 and before wax.(Keeping in mind i will be doing this by hand or if its okay then the cheap orbital i have).
-what else?????????????

To answer you question, yes there could be ill effects using 105 with the orbital as the old formula is recomended for rotary use and by hand only. The new formula which i believe wont be out until after the new year is approved for DA polishers and orbitals. However some people have achieved good results with 105 and DA polishers so you wont know for sure until you do a test spot. Just make sure not to do it in an ovious spot, use a quality pad, work clean, and inspect your work. If 105 does not finish up perfect you can try fallowing up with 9 or scratch x.

There wont really be ill effects.... but even the new products like #105, UC, SwirlX, etc have to be worked into/against the paint to remove swirls. Most cheap buffers simply dont have the power/torque to be able to do that. These new products may work better, but it is still going to be harder to remove swirls with a cheap buffer than a good one, or even possibly with your arms.

I am going to try a test panel on the VW this morning to see how it goes. I know the orbital lacks power to do any serious paint correction, but i'm convinced it will work with the M105 to accomoplish what i am doing......

I'll take some pics later on and report back.

Okay just finished up the trunk lid on DW VW. Apparently i **** at taking pictures so i only have 3 that turned out decent.

Overall i'm happy the way it turned out. Of course i wasn't able to remove 100% of the swirls and scratches but thats not what i was after. Any scratches left over, i could actually feel running my fingernail across.

As Mikejl said, hazing did occur after using M105, but that wasn't a problem at all.

I used the m105 with orbital, followed by M02 by hand, then M09 by hand. These were all the supplies i had on hand.

Yea, hopefully i can get some decent results for the rest of the car.........won't get to it until next week as the rest of today is family time followed by four days of work. But i'll be sure and give some updates next week when i get to it.

Well just to update, i got bored last night and went over to the hood to work on it. After wash and clay i started with the m105 but this time i got very bad hazing that was difficult to remove. Much more difficult to remove than when i used it on the trunk lid. I ended up stopping there, and using some leftover mothers products i had laying around, just applied a glaze and wax to the whole car and called it a day.

Oh also got an early x-mas present in the form of a Dewalt 849 polisher....... . So i have an old trunk lid in the garage that i'm going to practice on and see how it goes.

Congratulations on the rotary buffer and great idea to practice first.

Take some time to watch through these videos and then clean and clay the trunk lid before starting. You're going to need some buffing pads, see if you can find a quality wool cutting pad and a foam polishing pad to start with, most PBE stores will have these in stock.

If you get a wool cutting pad, be sure to get a Spur too for cleaning it.
