  • Deep scratch

I think I know the answer but I have to ask. Our daughter accidently put about a 12" scratch on the door of our 2006 Dodge Durango. Unfortunatley the rubber cap on the handlebar of her bicycle had worn off and it "dug" into the paint. I say "dug" because you can catch your fingernail on it. Touch up paint is an option but it never seems to be smooth and always shows up. Just trying to avoid a body shop. The paint is in really good condition as I have used Mequiar's products since we have had the vehicle and maintain the finish regularly. Any ideas? Thanks!

    Re: Deep scratch

If it is that deep then repainting is really your only option if you don't want to use touch up paint. If you were thinking of trying to remove the scratch then its like i tell my customers. If there is no paint there for me to work with then there is nothing i can do. When removing a scratch you are actually removing paint, leveling the paint ( clear coat ) to the bottom of the scratch. If the scratch is deep then to completely remove it means you will have an extremely thin clear coat and it will be susceptible to clear coat failure. If the scratch is all the way through the clear coat then there is nothing that can be done besides repainting.

Thanks for the input. That is what I was thinking but I guess a part of me was hoping for something different.
