  • Removal of vinyl and plastic pin stripes

I received a call from a customer that wanted the pin stripes taken off her 1999 Nissan Pathfinder. I asked the customer to give me a couple of days to find out a good way to get the 11 year old stripes off her vehicle with out using heat guns and without messing up the paint. I called a friend of mine that owns a paint and body shop and asked him what he uses. He said a pin stripe eraser. He said it is made of eraser material and you connect to a drill and have the disk vertical to the stripe and don't stop moving it. So the next day I went by his shop and he showed me the eraser and how to use it, then he ordered it for me and I went to the local Car Quest and picked it up. The eraser worked like a champ and I was able to remove the stripe from both sides of the vehicle and the glue in 30 minutes. Went over the area with a paint solvent to remove the eraser residue and waxed the area for protection. Here are pictures of the eraser and the end result.

I removed pinstripes from a vehicle I used to own a few years back with a heat gun and a good adhesive remover. I have never heard of a pinstripe eraser. How did it go compared to using a heat gun?

I know the last time I used a heat gun I kept burning my fingers, so compared to that alot less pain. lol. The eraser seemed alot quicker and the eraser residue was very easy to get off. I used some M205 and a yellow pad on my PC to polish the area and then some NXT wax.

Wheel is the best way to go for crappy, dried out stripes.
Since eraser wheels about $40 and very consumable. I try to pull them off with heat first.
In my experience, GM uses the most user friendly stripes. The stripes on my 92 caprice came off with a hair dryer.

$40? Where were you looking that was selling them for that much? I only paid $15 or so for the one I bought.

That's how much 3M sells theirs for... I'll have to try a carquest wheel now.
