  • 1st time with a rotary and m105. wow!

i've been using the twins for a few years now with a 7424 and have attained some pretty darn good results. i've had a roatary sittin in my tool box beggin me to just get rid of the fear and go for it!. well, i did a complete repaint on an 86 blazer about 6 weeks ago. well, i sprayed it about 6 weeks ago. spent many hours over the 4 weeks before stripping to bare metal, rust repair, inner and outer fender replacement, lots of time getting the door skins smooth and all the good body work to make it look good with new paint. the truck went to original dark metallic brown and 1st paint job with my new devilbiss tekna gun. i had OP in spots so wet sanded through the grits to 2500.
now the sad part: i didnt have enough m105/ 205 to complete the truck! bummer. didnt think about it til it was time and the owner was picking it up in 2 days. not enough time to get the product delivered( no shops around that caryy em). so i tried another brand that was carried at the shop i get my supplies from. looked good for a few weeks. owner called and said he wanted to stop by and have me take a look at the truck. dulled out terribly. i could see that the product i used wasnt worhtwhile.
so i ordered up the m105/205 and decided it was time to try out the rotary ( using a wool pad for 105 and blue foam for 205). i started with slow speed and worked up. found a decent spped and worked up to where i was comfortable and getting the results i wanted ( removal of sanding marks that were there after the "other product" washed off). WOW!!! the time involved to do the whole truck was cut down tremendously!!! and the results were awesome( well, awesome was achieved with the da, but just took a lot more time). i had just finished with the 105 and the owner stopped by and he about fainted! i said, " please, wait til i get done with the 205 and put a glaze on it before fainting!"
i'm pretty geeked with the results and the amount of time cut off using the rotary. and at this point in time, still not interested in trying any other products!

    Good job, Tom.

You used the right package for your project: rotary buffer, M105/ M205 twins, refined sanding with 2500 grit.
Rotary buffers work much faster with severe defect removal but also provide great polishing/ jeweling results.

    Keep the good work going.

thanks, greg. i couldnt believe it could be that quick and good, so before puttin on the glaze, i washed the truck down and after blow drying, took one of my work lights and started goin at all different angles trying to find any flaws. only one spot where i think i didnt work it enough. i did learn a few things. 1) with the 105, keep the work area small. 2) my shop was a bit chilly when i started and as the shop heated up, the 105 started dusting up, so i shut the heat off and opened the door for a few to cool back down to about 60. 3) about 1600 rpm's seemd to work pretty good, but the 105 dusted up rather quick, so i slowed it to about 1000-1200 and it helped out.

        Nice.

I'm sure you're familiar with Kevin Brown Method but here's some more from The Master himself:

Glad to hear you've had such a great experience with M105 via rotary.

From a personal perspective I'll never forget the first time I used it...... we were working on the Alpine Electronics CES project just after Christmas 2007 and M105 had just been released, as had our W5000 Double Sided Wool pad. I was underneath the hull of the boat, buffing out the sanding marks from the custom Santini paint job when Kevin Brown came up to me and said "Wow, look what you did!". I froze for a second because I figured that meant that I had just messed up this amazing paint but in reality Kevin just had a different viewing angle on the hull than I did, so he saw this:

Yep, that is after just M105 on a W5000 wool pad spinning at 1800 rpm to pull out the sanding marks. M105 really is killer stuff!
