Re: Which is the best rotary buffer?

I've had 2) 9227 makita's -1 for detailing and the other for metal polishing.

Used a DeWalt where I used to work.

I like the DeWalt for the cleaning steps because of the little extra weight.

I like the makita better for the control it just fits so well in my hands and the soft start -up plus the fact that it starts out at 600 rpm's.

    Just my opinion and thoughts.

I would go with the Makita or the Flex. They are both light & won't wear you out.

Can I jump in with a quick question about the Makita, which might well help Daytona 1553.

I've often seen them billed as starting at 0 RPM. I'm led to believe that the trigger can control the speed up to the speed selected on the dial. So, on speed 1 the MAXIMUM speed is 600 RPM, but if the trigger is pulled up only part way then a speed under 600 RPM is possible. Is that how it works?

All the major rotary tools on the market (Makita, DeWalt, Hitachi, etc) are pretty similar with regard to vibration; they are direct drive tools that do not oscillate like a D/A, so vibration is virtually nil. Ergonomics is a bit of a personal issue; the Hitachi is very light and extremely quiet, the Makita has a "soft start" and a bale type handle, and the DeWalt comes on full force and features a stick handle. Which you prefer is up to you. Build quality on all seems to be quite high.

You'll find those who swear by any of these, and other users who own both and will give you pluses and minuses for each.

I love my 9227c Makita. Maybe bcause it is what I started and learned with years ago. I've tried others and they just feel different to me. I've used mine alot and never had any problems with it at all. Highly recomend the Mikita. BTW the "c" on the end of 9227c is for the bail type handle. (whitch is nice fo even pressure from the top of the polisher)The 9227 is with the straight side handle.
I almost oreded a Flex but then i started to think about parts etc. Sometime in Canuck land things are alot harder to get than in the good ol' US of A. Makita is everywhere here.

... a few Makita users advocating their choice of polisher. Please could one of you answer my question about them?

If I understand your question correctly then the answer is "yes". Your finger on the trigger controls the rpm up to the max selected. I like that mainly because I cantrol the product and stop it from slinging by starting off at the speed I feel comfortable with.

Superb! Thanks, man ... I've regarded the Makita as my next polisher, keeping my Kestrel SIM180 as a backup ...the shape and size is the same casing as my Kestrel, so the balance should be about the same.

General consensus about the Harbor Freight rotary is that it is far from "best".

IMHO it will serve the purpose just fine for those that are on tight budget and do not polish paint day in day out.

I've only used my Metabo, but there was a time when that was considered top of the line. Nobody seems to be selling them anymore, so the issue may be moot. Another name to throw out is Festool. Not common either, though.
