  • Rotary use: M105 - 8207 pad.....

    Gang,

On my last detail, I got the rotary thing down pretty good. However....here and there I would experience a situation that looks like the product would sling out and kind of splatter on the paint and dry instantly and take some doing to remove. I clean the pad on the fly after every application and didn't experience it all the time. I didn't take a picture of it but basically it seems to "puke" out product and dries instantly.

    Any suggestions? Too much product?

I lay a bead of product down about 6" or so pick it up with my rotary and work it in. I clean on the fly and do it again, it does it on a dry pad, pad used a while etc. I do switch pads on every side of the vehicle.

    Thanks

Did you experience this when you switched to a clean pad or the when you started working?

Cleaning on a fly helps, but I've noticed that when you use a pad too much some of the product can dry inside. So maybe you could experience this. I usually clean my pad on a fly but I also chance to a new pad very often

Aaron, there are times when picking up that bead of product that you misjudge the pickup point by a fraction, and you'll get some splatter. That's why you see guys taping off grilles, cowls, and other areas that they won't even come close to with the pad - it's to prevent having to go back and clean up all those areas after the fact because, inevitably, some sling is going to happen. Nobody's perfect.

This happens after I pickup the bead and work for a few seconds, then the stuff just "falls" out on the paint, not splattering and drying to a cement like consistancy and going over it again with the pad just moves the product to where I buffed and dries again..... Hard to explain. Only until I figured out my bad splattering picking up a bead as I am left handed and did that part backwards Splat! and thanks to Tim Lingor, I don't have splatter problems at all with bead pickup.....

OK, gotcha. It may well be that, as the pad tilts slightly or moves lightly over even a gentle ridge on a body panel, or even just lightly off the edge, that action will actually pull a bit of excess product off the face of the pad and deposit it on the paint. Thinking about the times when the product just "falls" out of the pad, are you near and edge or running over any kind of body line? That will usually do it.

That's the wierd part, pad is flat on the surface, it seems to bog, tilt on it's own or appear to and then and puke out product..... Could be the rotary not holding it's own load speed. I do clean the pad on the fly and used about 3-4 pads on the car, then 4-5 pads with the PC....Glad I've built up my pads over the course of time.

I figure 99.9% of rotary is experience. I've come a long ways baby! but have this issue once in a while...

No biggee, wondered if anyone else had the problem and what the cure was.

I did do a rotary job on the hood of my supervisors Explorer and the finish was PERFECT! Not one Swirl or RIDS.

Tim Lingor sure helped me behind the scenes and I owe him for that.

It sure helped to pick up the bead right as I'm left handed and did it backwards It rained a lot at Nappers house, just not water, M83/M80 at the time.....
