Nice. Funny enough, I just purchased a junk hood to practice on. Red, too.

That's good going. After only a wool pad which comes with the Makita.

I personally like wool pads for cutting as they are a lot cooler compared to foam. I like using a fine lambswool and it cuts out 2000 sanding marks easily, with a medium compound. I find with this combination,I avoid holograms. Even when I pass after with a soft buff foam pad and extra fine polish,it doesn't change a great deal.

I see a bit of hologram in the pic,but I think that is down to the pad that comes with the machine. Try and see if you can get a good quality lambswool pad.

      Are your pads velcro attatched?

I actually have a lambswool pad I havent tried yet. the wool pad was velcro yes

question on the wool pad: is it supposed to absorb the product alot more than the foam? I couldnt see much product spreading on the hood

That looks great. It is a great idea to practice like this.

Not really a great deal of difference. Maybe your first pass was a little dry. It should be much the same. The foam tends to absorb more,at the start.

Don't sweat that bit of hologram you have, you'll find that with a very aggressive approach like M105 and a wool cutting pad some holograms are inevitable. You won't find many accomplished detailers who would recommend going from that combo straight to wax anyway!

As for the amount of product you see on the paint when working with a rotary, especially with a wool pad, it sounds like you observations are normal. If you're used to seeing a relatively heavy film of product when using a D/A and watching it slowly break down and diminish, you generally won't see as heavy a film with the rotary - even less when using a wool pad. As you get into the less aggressive combinations of pad/liquid you'll start to see more, but if the film is too heavy the rotary is just going to throw it all over the garage, the car, and you.

Glad to see you are taking the time to really learn how to use the rotary!!! Eventually I hope to do the same and really test out the rotary in all combinations and learn the machine. Mike, since I would also probably end up having to pay for hoods would it be okay to swirl back up the practice hood and polish it back multiple times instead of buy multiple hoods?

Most definitely you can swirl it back up - heck, you can wet sand it if you want to! If you're just looking to put in some swirls, an old piece of carpet remnant does an outstanding job. Before introducing Ultimate Compound last year one of our forum members, Ryan L., was given a sample to play with (he didn't know for sure what it was at the time though) but he didn't have a swirled car to test it on. So he grabbed an old piece of carpet and rubbed it against otherwise defect free paint. Swirled the heck out of the paint, but he got 'em out with UC by hand.

Get as much out of it as possible. Even if you get down to base coat on your practice panel,it's not going to matter at the end of the day. So get that old rag and swirl it up....That's the easy part.

you guys are paying for these panels...where are you going? Breakers yards or bodyshops? If it's the breakers yards, they'll charge you for sure, but the bodyshops should be happy for you to take bits of their hands. Plus you can always return it to them.
