  • Rotary Replacement?

    Makita or equivalent 2500rpm Drill:

Drill to Rotary Backing Plate Adapter:

    3.5" Rotary Backing Plate:

    3.5" Foamed Wool Pad:

A $20 combo if you already have a powerful corded drill.

Will this work? I understand that this combo will take a longer time to remove defects, but I read that the drill is often used in place of the DA for severe spot defects. One of the main concerns may be that the drill may not have enough amp, but propel the pad at the desired RPM, but some drills do. They even use this exact combo for headlight restoration. If it works on removing 1500 grit marks on headlights, it probably would work on the paint, given that paint is softer than some clear plastic.

          MOUSEEEEEEEEEEE

Do yourself a favor and purchase a rotary polisher made specifically for polishing paint. Cheap new ones can be had at harbor freight or similar or a nice used one at the swap meet/flea market or on Ebay.

I'd only use a set up that you posted about for spot work in hard to reach areas.

            It can be done:

            [/QUOTE]

Steve uses a drill a lot for tight areas (and larger areas, too). He started rotary polishing with a drill so didn't know the difference! Once he tried out the rotary he was surprised at the increased cutting power. It wasn't necessarily because the drill motor was weak- it wasn't. It was the leverage and comfort that was gained using the rotary.

Drills can definitely come in handy for polishing paint... but was it really intended for this purpose?
Tool abuse, peeeer-haps?!? Hmmmmm? Just a joke from another thread a long time ago.

Oh yeah, I remember that from a while ago.

Supposedly I heard that this tool is designed for small scratches and touch-up repairs. I also heard that this tool can be more dangerous than an actual rotary. Eventually I will get the above setup for headlight and bumper buffing. My regular buffing pads are too big to cover the headlights around the grill. I will be buying a rotary in a matter of weeks. I want to try out the Surbuf pads first. I love the suspense of getting new tools.

By the way, I called Elmo today and had him switch my order to the 7". I cannot wait, Kevin!

Okay.... you don't want to know what I saw a drill was used for on some extremely sinister grown-up website I accidentally came across on the Internet many years ago...

                  Re: Rotary Replacement?

I have used a drill with a Meguiar's drill mounted wool pad for polishing up some wheels. The cut of the wool is much greater than a foam, but it had to be followed up with a bit of polishing by hand.

Kevin has a ton of Meguiar's drill mounted pads (foam and wool) if you need some.

Hey Chris, is Kevin willing to sell some for a good price for me to test out?

The drill mounted wool pad seems very useful on a variety of surfaces. But unfortunately it is, as I have seen, only available with headlight restoration packages.

That's a good drill for making holes.

                          Re: Rotary Replacement?

                          Morning,

                          Check out my thread:

                          *Review* Tools of the Trade!

But I have to say, you are playing with fire. It is not difficult to wrinkle the paint on a composite bumper when using a rotary. This becomes FAR more dangerous when using small pads. I do use 3" pads, but I have also used a rotary for a long time. So be careful or you will need another paint job.....
