  • Swirl Remover not working?

Ok, so I started to get to work on polishing my brother-in-laws Honda Civic. Well, I wanted to use the trunk as a test panel. I didn't want to start too aggressive so I used a LC PFW pad with Meguiar's Medium Cut Compound. After that, I wanted to get rid of the defects it left behind, such as a few holograms and swirls. I switched to a Meguiar's Solo Black Finishing pad with Meguiars Swirl Remover 2.0. I did quite a few passes at about 800-900 rpm to try to get the swirls out. It worked alright and took some of the bigger swirls and holograms, but if you look closely in the sun, you can still see swirls. I'm lost as to what will help. I always see the combo of M105/M205 being used, but for the moment, I want to see if I can somehow put what I have to use. Should I invest in a different finishing polish or different pads? Which combo should I use to get rid of the swirls? Any help would be great! Thanks guys

It sounds like your finishing combination isn't aggressive enough to remove the initial combination.

Do you have any pads or polishes in between M01 and M09 or between the LC Purple Wool and the Black pad?

Keep in mind that M09 is very mild and the black pad has almost no cut, you can try to adjust your technique slightly to see if you can bump the cutting ability of the polish.

First, don't be afraid to use a little pressure. Second, bump the speed of the machine up to 1500-1800 RPM, at least for the initial passes. Work the polish with pressure and speed until it begins to clear, then reduce pressure and speed with each subsequent pass. Cascade down to 1000 RPM and no pressure, and make a couple light passes.

If this doesn't work then you are going to have to step up the aggressiveness.

It is best to match a medium polish with a medium pad, but you can try M01 with a Lake Country White Foam pad or a Meguiars Yellow Foam pad. My only fear would be that the M01, even with a mild pad, is still going to leave behind some level of marring that may be too much for M09 to remove.

You could also try M09 with the Purple Foamed Wool Pad prior to final polishing instead of M01 with the a white pad. In this case start about 1500 rpm and bring the rpm down through out the cycle.

Your best bet bet would be to use a dedicated medium polish such as M80/Speed Glaze, M83 DACP, or M02 Fine Cut Cleaner, but with a little experimentation you might find a way to get the results your after.

Thank you so much for your insight on this I really appreciate it. I'm looking into buying an orange and white LC CCS pads. I would also like to give M105/205 a shot as I've seen many people use this combo.

FWIW, I would not get CCS pads for use with M105/M205. Using a flat pad design (with out the dimples) will increase the surface area of the pad, and providing the pad has been sufficently primed, increase the polishing action.

Well I'm glad I mentioned that before I went out and bought them. Thanks for the advice. One other question I have is this: How long am I supposed to work the product in? I've seen people say a few minutes while others say 1 minute max before applying more product and doing a second pass. How do we know when to stop so we're not buffing dry? Also, which foam pads would you recommend using with M105/M205?

Ok, so I might need an in between polish to help after the cutting stage. I'm using M85 with PFW LC for the initial cut, and then I was recommended to go to M83. Would M205 work also? I'm planning on getting M105 soon, so I figured for the time being, why not use M205? Also, which foam pad should I use M205 with?

After using M85 on a PFW pad, you could use M205.

I would use a polishing or cutting pad with M205 to remove the holograms. If the polishing pad is not giving the desired results, you can always step up to a cutting pad.

Thanks for the advice . I went out and bought M80 today and after using M85 on a PFW pad, I used M80 with a yellow foam pad and the results were great! I was really really surprised at how good it came out. Thanks for the help guys
