For heavy cutting, the DeWalt ranks highest in my book. Anytime I have a vehicle that I need to use a wool pad on, the DeWalt is the tool for the job.
However, for final polishing(foam pad and low speeds), the Makita is the better choice. The Makita offers better control, and is lighter, which will make those vertical panels less of a chore.
I use both on a daily basis, and I don't think I could do a full cut and polish without either one. But for final polishing, the Makita ranks a bit higher for me. If you could only buy one, I would chose the Makita. It's much more comfortable and forgiving for a beginner.
