    Quick Safety Note

Never Lay Power Cord Over Your Shoulder While Buffing I Heard Of A Young Fellow Who Did And The Cord Got Tangled Up In The Pad And Wrapped So Tightly Around His Neck Until His Coworkers Could Get It Cut Off Of Him He Was Gone So Please Lets Not Loose Another Detailer.

but you can see most experts (even those on MOL) doing it to prevent accidental scratching on paintwork....

Why was the cord around his neck instead of over his shoulder? I don't see how it could get tangled around his neck if it was on the shoulder as we all do. Also, why was he buffing over the cord? The cord is on the other end of the buffer.

And yet sometimes they just die for no apparent reason. My Porter Cable 7428 rotary (note this is NOT a Porter Cable 7424 Dual Action polisher, it's a true rotary) died after 6 uses. My Makita 9227 is still going strong.

            Nothing is perfect.
Sometimes we are the "lucky" ones to get the bad ones or the ones that are out of the range of "OK" for the manufacturer that somehow got out. I guess with the 7428 you were "lucky"

the weak link is the switch it makes and breaks power to the motor, or if it's that new could be a loose or pinched wire.

Re: How Long Does Your Rotary Buffer Last ?

Bought my first rotary buffer in 1988 until then our local tool rental store rented rotary buffers for something like $15.00 for the weekend, that included an old worn out wool pad that should have never been used on paint.

Still have my original rotary buffer but this year when doing some grinding work on steel the gear drive unit started making some grinding noise and then quit working altogether.

Need to find a repair store in the SoCal area to have it rebuilt.

Re: How Long Does Your Rotary Buffer Last ?

I tore my Chicago Electric rotary apart and the gear box (where the spindle is for the backing plate) was full of grease. I cleaned that out and put new grease in it. I also checked the brushes and where the brushes make contact (cleaned with my dremel).

It seems to work better with new grease. The old grease was nasty and gummy.

For best performance the brushes ride on the commutator which is made up of bars called segments you should see a dark chocolate brown color on the commutator that means the tool is working properly and i would not recommend cleaning it.

I really don't see how the cord could get tangled up in the buffing wheel if you have it over your shoulder and going straight back. It would have to be right there on the paint surface right next to the wheel. We put the cord over our shoulders so it doesn't drag on the paint surfaces. The guy must have just been not paying attention which you should be always paying attention during this type of work.

Not sure how I missed this response to my comment but I did. Anyway.... the thing still powers on but it revs up very slowly and sounds like it never even gets up to the slowest speed. Turning the dial will bring up the revs slightly, but it sort of wavers and then just holds that same very slow speed.

Do they work on Makita Rotary Buffers?

If so, I'm so there... my Makita needs to be overhauled so badly...
