  • Ok, I am convinced that I need a rotary now!

Seems the more cars I detail, the more cars I come across that take more and more time. Right now I am working on a 93 Mustang with an aftermarket BASF paint job on it. It's a torch red vette color and it's KICKING MY BEHIND!!! It takes 83 and a PC and just laughs at me!

I've used the G100 for years now, and I think I've successfully read everything there is to read about the rotarty. Now it's time to acually buy one and start practicing with it. I think I have just about every product made by Meguiars(not all, but 90%). I've also got the perfect practice vehicle. A black 1991 Lexus LS400(belongs to my fiance, and it's a beater car. So the only thing I can do is improve it. She wouldn't care if it got stripped to bare metal.....well, maybe a little

I've settled on the Makita 9227 or the DeWalt DW849. I'm beating my head against the wall trying to figure out which of the 2 I want. The Makita does have the advantage of being almost 2 ponds lighter.

Also, one question that I haven't seen covered too much, how much pressure do you apply with the rotary? The G100 is about 15 pounds, do I apply the same pressure with the rotary, or just the weight of the machine?

    Thanks in advance!

I have a Hitachi SPV, several friends own Makita's and DeWalts...

IMO, the Makita is better then the DeWalt because of the weight issue. Two pounds isn't much, but when you're buffing horizontal planes, that weight can begin to add up. My personaly favorite is the Hitachi (obviously) because it has a 5 year warrenty, is lighter then the Makita, and comes with a bail handle (also has all the features of the Makita).

I don't really put pressure on the machine, if anything, when I nearing the end of a pass, I may lift up slightly and take some pressure off.
Let's make all of the cars shiny!

Just a F.Y.I. showcargarage.com should have their rotary dvd out pretty soon.

Thanks for your input! It is appreaciated!

I went ahead and ordered the Makita. They has a nice deal with a bag and a couple of pads that I'm sure I won't be using, but the bag will be nice for storage.

Yeah, been waiting on that one for a while now. I'll be happy when Richard gets everything together and starts shipping them out.

Re: Ok, I am convinced that I need a rotary now!

As Mike Phillips says often in his video on the PC (with the black 1960 vette).....technique is extremely important. Practice on something that you are not worried about damaging. I started out on my daughter in laws black pathfinder. It has 150,000 miles on it and has a couple of dented fenders. It was a great test. When I was done it looked great, she was extremely happy and I had learned a lot about using the rotary and had tackled the toughest color there is. So practice is important.

As far as pressure, I do put pressure (not a lot) at first then lighten up to only the weight of the machine for the last passes. As with the PC, you need to allow the diminishing abrasive to break down and do some final polishing at the end.

The rotary is a great tool once you master the proper technique. As mentioned above, there is a DVD coming from Showcargarage.com and I would highly recommend getting it, knowing who the instruction is from.

Yeah, I have the perfect test vehicle just sitting there waiting for me to attack it

I'm also patiently awaiting the release of the showcargarage DVD. Kind of curious as to why it's been taking so long to produce. My intital thoughts were that there were legal problems of Mike producing a freelance video after he left showcargarage.com for Meguiarsonline. But Richard says that it's just editing and production delays.
Either way, it would be something that would be very valueable to me, and I am waiting for it.

It’s a huge amount of work to do post-production for a high quality training video and Richard has to do the whole thing by himself. Watch the credits roll by at the end of even the shortest, simplest educational video on PBS sometime and count how many production people are involved. Then substitute Richard’s name in for each and every one of them.

Then remember that Richard does video production in his “spare time,” does his “day job” (detailing) to pay the rent and is raising a family.

I’m impressed it’s getting done as fast as it is.

Oh, I wasn't complaining! Not by any means! I didn't know Richard was doing the entire thing himself. I thought I read somewhere that he had someone else doing it.

I'm a patient man. No worries there!

Being a newbie, I went to showcargarage.com and they have a DVD about restoring a 196x Corvette but this doesn't seem to be the one on using a rotary buffer. Do you know if the DVD is out yet and what the URL is to be able to get to it? Do you happen to know what the exact title is, such that I can watch for it -- would it be announced on their site?

                    thanks, Tom

Its not available yet, and with Mike Phillips back at Meguiar's its now not known if its going to come out at all. I'd say just keep your eyes open on this forum and SCG and when it becomes available you'll know.

I had the same question, and here's the answer from Mike Phillips.
