  • What buff pads to use with #2 and #3 liquids….

Fresh BB/CC paint, painted last sunday 4/16.

Sanded flat with 1000, then cleaned up with 2000.

Have high speed rotary, DA, and an electric buffer in my arsenal.

I have used these in the past with great results…

    Meguiars #2 Fine Cut Cleaner # M-0216 and Meguiars #3 Machine Glaze # M-0316.

Have plenty still left and would like to use them again as they always give great results. Local jobber supplied me with a universal yellow waffle pad to use with both products. Problem is I left it dirty and it has sat for far too long. Worked ok but I am looking to improve my results. I do have a W9000 pad new in the bag and my assumption would be to use this with the #3 Machine Glaze?

What would be the best pad to use with the #2 Fine Cut Cleaner if I am correct on the above W9000?

Thanks guys, some amazing results around here. This forum and my lurking has lead me to the desire to step up "my game"!!

If you want to pull out 2000 grit sanding marks you are going to need something more aggressive than M02 Fine Cut Cleaner.

I would recommend M105 and either a wool pad (W4000 or W5000) or W7*** cutting pad depending on the results of a test spot.

M02 Fine Cut Cleaner with a W8*** series polishing pad could be used after M105 if you wanted to clean up marks left by M105. M03 Machine Glaze could then be used on your W9000 finishing pad as a final step before waxing depending on how well M02 finished out.

In all honesty, I would go with the M105/M205 combo for removing sanding marks and polishing to a high gloss.

Easy enough. I can pick up the M105 after work. I myself prefer to use foam pads when I can. Used wool once years back and had a bad experience. Best to use air powered buffer or porter cable electric DA here?

"M02 Fine Cut Cleaner with a W8*** series polishing pad could be used after M105 if you wanted to clean up marks left by M105."

Just need the pad here if so. Easy enough. Again, buffer or DA best used?

"M03 Machine Glaze could then be used on your W9000 finishing pad as a final step before waxing depending on how well M02 finished out."

This would only be DA use here correct? And no wax for fresh paint. How best to protect after the machine glaze?

So after sanding with 2000 use the M105 and a W7*** cutting pad. Then step up to the M205 with the W9000 pad I have. Just those 2 steps. The clear is fresh and cut nice and easy with the paper so I don't see it being real hard (surface wise).

Sorry for the questions, completely new arena for me.

Re: What buff pads to use with #2 and #3 liquids….

I'll attack the M105/M205 questions first....

If you don't want to use wool then I would go with a W7207 (or any W7*** pad) with M105 to remove 2000 grit sanding marks. would do this with a rotary buffer. Then, I would pick up a W8207 (or any W8***) pad and use M205 to really refine the finish. If you wanted, you could then use your W9000 pad with M205 for even cleaner, crisper finish. If using the last jeweling step, I would keep the speed down; nice and slow. A DA could be used in the two steps following compounding with M105 if you choose or you could do it with a rotary; personal preference.

The only reason I mentioned wool is that foam pads have a tendency to generate a lot of heat and since you will be using a very aggressive process, the likelihood of burning the paint increases. Wool offers more cut, less heat but more hazing. Foam offers less cut, more heat but less hazing. Personal preference really.

        Now the other questions.....

"M02 Fine Cut Cleaner with a W8*** series polishing pad could be used after M105 if you wanted to clean up marks left by M105."

Just need the pad here if so. Easy enough. Again, buffer or DA best used?

The pad could be either W8207 or W8000. You could use either a DA or a rotary; personal preference again.

"M03 Machine Glaze could then be used on your W9000 finishing pad as a final step before waxing depending on how well M02 finished out."

This would only be DA use here correct? And no wax for fresh paint. How best to protect after the machine glaze?

You could use M03 by DA or by rotary; personal preference. As far as protection for fresh paint goes, I only know of M80 Speed Glaze that has breathable paint protection. It will give some protection and is safe for freshly applied paint. You could apply this by hand if you want and you would use it as a wipe-on-wipe-off. It's not the best protection but it is something. Otherwise, you could just use a regular washing routine to keep the paint clean and after 90 days, apply your favorite protection product.

You say this is a completely new arena for you. Does that mean new to working on fresh paint, removing sanding marks, etc?

By the way, where are you in New York?

"You say this is a completely new arena for you. Does that mean new to working on fresh paint, removing sanding marks, etc?"

The REAL detail work "arena". Fresh paint is old hat for me. Did 2 years of vocational school and then 6 years in a production environment in 2 different shops. I got out of it as a business but continue as a side hobby when I have the time. I am wanting to improve my skills in the wetsand and buff area along with better detailing skills.

"By the way, where are you in New York?"

I live in the Middletown area but work right near you in Ramsey, NJ.

Thanks for all of the tips. I plan to use them. Time to pick up some supplied and have at it. Thanks!

Ok this is the game plan, thanks Shawn T.

I just placed an order with Rick @ ADS.

Only deviation is I am using the older (although they are brand new) W7000,8000,9000 series pads. I was talking about my project with a buddy who had bought them but ended up going with the 2.0 pad kit. Gave them to me for free along with the backing pad for the rotary. I did a lot of reading after you suggested the 105/205 combo and like what I hear.

For the hell of it I did try to buff out the 2000 marks with m02 and the 7000 pad. Although it did cut them down to a degree they are still to noticeable to leave alone. Although the gloss was amazing.

Re: What buff pads to use with #2 and #3 liquids….

OK I buffed the hood out tonight.

Started with the wool W5000 and M105. Hands down too easy. Made me feel like I actually knew how to rotary buff. Sanding marks disappeared quickly and with just a few passes. Did the entire hood in sub-sections. Washed it thoroughly.

Moved on to M205 with a W8000 foam pad. Not much difference in gloss as the 105 buffs out amazingly nice, but it was glossier. Did the entire hood in sub-sections again. Washed again and dried thoroughly. Hood looks amazing. The M105/205 combo is very user friendly in my case. Thank you Shawn T for recommending it.

I also purchased a Makita 9227C which was night and day compared to my old air powered unit. No going back in this case.

But I do have one concern, there are slight "hazes" or "buffer trails" from the M205/W8000 combo. Not swirls at all, and you need to find that one angle to be able to see them. Would the W9000 pad and M205 or M03 take care of this?
