  • will a da do any paint correction?

Ok I have heard both sides of this. This would be for taking out swirls. One guy told me that all they are good for is putting wax on but after looking at some of the before and after pictures it looks like it can do work.

So when it comes down to it what is the best way to take swirls out? Which compounds, pads and what type of buffer?

    Thanks,
    Andrew B.

It looks like the person, whom you talked to, gave you the wrong information. Dual action (random orbital) polishers are capable of performing paint correction jobs. Swirl removal shouldn't be any problem for one of those reliable machines: Meguiar's G110v2, Porter Cable 7424 XP, Griot's Garage 6".

To remove swirls you could start with a cleaner polish first, like SwirlX or Ultimate Polish, using yellow polishing pad. You need to move your machine slowly (1"-2"/ second) and apply down pressure but don't stop pad rotation (you can monitor it by marking backing plate with a line). If swirls are heavy to moderate or you deal with a hard paint Ultimate Compound/ yellow polishing pad may be needed.

Orbital buffers are machines for wax applications/ paint polishing but you don't want one of those.

      ^ what Greg said ^

I think the person you were talking with was thinking a DA is one of those $15 wax-pusher orbitals from WalMart. Not even close to the same thing as the G, the PC, or the GG DA.

You can do a lot of correction with a DA- This was all with my G110, foam pads, and Meg's compounds...

That's a nice piece of work you did with your DA, Joe.

        It looks fantastic.

        Was it UC or M105?

Re: will a da do any paint correction?

As Greg points out, the guy who told you that D/A buffers are only good for wax application was probably thinking about those cheap 10" orbitals you can pick up at any auto parts store. A true D/A like the units Greg mentioned are a huge step up in capability compared to those cheap tools. All the results you've seen on this forum and others don't lie - people really are getting out defects with these tools. Sure, they have limitations and are not a direct rival for a high speed rotary, but the safety factor with a D/A is what makes them so popular among detailing enthusiasts and pros alike. In fact, they are so safe that after a 15 minute training session I would let you buff on my car with one.

            Thanks Greg!

I actually had a bottle of #83 that I had sitting on the shelf that I wanted to use up, so I suffered through that for about 4 applications (I know- but I wanted it gone... ) then one of UC and topped with #16 and NXT 2.0- but I think it did come out pretty good.

It came out great. It shows clearly what DAs can do.

especially since it was only with 83. If it was with UC, it would have been even easier.

Also right about the DA safety- I don't even use a rotary anymore. Last one I used was on my 1990 SHO about 4 years ago.

Re: will a da do any paint correction?

Thats what I thought. Funny thing is the guy I was talking to was doing meguiars demo's at the Detroit AutoRoma in the Painter Supply booth and the da in question was a meguiars da.

Right now I have a cheap rotary that I have been able to some swirls out but now all. I am going to school for collision repair and painting and thats what we use there.

I need to get a system setup of what I use to a detail. I decided before I actually do actual customer cars I would like to get a better handle on everything. So my friend and I are buying fixing cars up making them look good and run and drive right. Making money and learning at the same time.

Re: will a da do any paint correction?

There was a thread earlier about some Megs reps in Canada shows, and they were not knowledgeable at all as far as the products. The guys in Irvine were going to look into it, since a lot of times they're just local companies that hire dudes to wax out cars in the booth and try to sell products and they may or not even be what they would call "real" Megs guys... I'd look through the threads here and look to the factory techs here rather than the booth guys...

                      That's interesting...
I heard that Megs is going to have a setup and seminars with Michael Stoops April 7th-9th at the West Palm Beach Barrett Jackson Car Collector auction. I'm looking forward to it.

                      10:00am - 5:00pm Meguiar's Car Care Seminars

10:00am Intro to the Dual Action Polisher
12:00pm Swirl and Defect Removal with a DA Polisher
2:30pm Intro to the Dual Action Polisher
5:00pm Swirl and Defect Removal with a DA Polisher

BTW - I have removed "tons" of swirls, scratches and I have done lots of paint correction with a DA. The new DA MF system makes it even better and easier. It has certainly raised the bar.

This hood was badly covered is swirls, corrected and finished using ONLY a DA.

I found the guys card today. His name is Mark Cartier. He has came to my school before to show devilbiss and norton products.

And its good to know that a da will do the work. Looks like I will be buying one after I sell tbhis 1st car.
