  • W64DA backing plate Velcro separated

I am sure this question has been answered before, but my search for an older thread on the topic has come up empty.

Last week while using the DA, the Velcro on my W64DA backing plate separated from the foam rubber. Does anyone know why this happened? The backing plate is probably 4 years old; could the adhesive have just failed due to age? Also, is there any way this can be repaired? I thought about buying a can of 3M Super 77 adhesive, but I am not sure if it would provide a good bond between the Velcro and foam rubber, if it would stand up to the heat, etc.. I called Meguiar’s customer service yesterday afternoon, the gentleman I spoke to was as helpful as could be, but he had not heard of this problem before and was not aware of any ‘fix’. I don’t mind buying a new backing plate if contact cement will not fix mine; I just want to make sure that if the failure was due to something I may have done incorrectly I don’t do it again. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just as the buffing pads are considered wear items, so are backing plates. A lot of factors will determine the ultimate useful life of this, or any, product. If you run the machine at speed 6 on a regular basis, the heat generated can, over time, start to break down the adhesive and cause premature failure of the backing plate. But just a lot of "regular" use over time will do it too.

The same thing can be said of tires and brake pads - the more you use them, the harder you use them (and that does NOT mean abuse, by the way) the sooner they wear out. Plain and simple.

As for repairing with some sort of adhesive, we wouldn't recommend it as the heat generated, even through normal use, may well have a negative impact on that adhesive.

Dang, I gave my W64DA away a long time ago.....

I bought myself a W68DA, works great with the new pads and still work great with the old ones!
