  • G110 not removing scratches

Last evening I noticed some scratches on the decklid of my Duster. My car was re-painted this past summer. The clear coat is PPG DCU 2002. My first thought was that these scratches are swirl marks. I tried using M83, swirl-X, even ultimate compound all with the G110 and even tried M105 by hand. When using the DA I applied two to three pea size beads of the product. Set setting around "5". Overlap my passes slowley and using a good amount of pressure. After wiping off residue with megs microfiber I noticed no change. So what I am thinking is these are scratches from wetsanding since I couldn't remove them. So am I correct that the G110 is "not" capable of remove wetsanding scratches? That was my conclusion at the end of the evening. So only a rotary with these compunds/polishes can remove these scratches?

All information is greatly appreciated. Thanks

A DA cannot remove wet sanding scratches.
Are the scratches fine and look like they are below the surface?

They do look very fine. But I can't tell if they are below the surface. After everything I have tried that is the only explanation I can come up with. Sounds like I am going to have to teach myself to use the rotary

      Thanks

Any chance you could take it to the shop who resprayed the car to get their opinions? It could be something they overlooked and would correct it for you. Just a thought, I've taken my car back since a recent repaint and they removed a couple specs of dirt that made it into the clearcoat.

What grit did you use to sand the hood?

Some paints are harder than others. If you use a grit that is too aggressive, the scratches will be very difficult to remove even with the rotary. I like to use atleast 2000 grit papers before trying to remove the marks, but the use of a higher grit paper will make removing those marks easier.

          What papers are you using?

Not all wet sanding papers are the same. The standard 3M yellow sheets are known to leave tracers (deeper than normal scratches). The Unigrit papers are by far the best to use.

          What pad were you using?

The DA and M83 should have atleast made some improvement on the marks.

2-3 pea dots of product on the DA? That doesn't sound like a lot of product to me.

I've always done and seen people put like a circle around the edge of the pad, or a big "X" across the entire pad?

              Re: G110 not removing scratches

My dad painted the car and the both of us wetsanded it shortly after painting it . It was only my second or third time wetsanding a car. And the decklid was one of the panels I did. I can't remember the grits I used, but I think I started with 1500 then ended with 2000 grit with meguiars unigrit sandpaper. The pad I was using with the DA was the W8207 polishing pad. I guess I could try more product as "mb911" suggested. I just didn't want to over do it and saturate the pad with the polish. I'll try giving the "X" pattern a shot. Some spots of the car look great, but the panels with the scratches only show up in the right light. Other than that it's hard to notice them but still annoying knowing that they are there.

Thanks for everyones help. I can never have too much information.

Can you post some pictures of what your working on? That would greatly help in having us suggest what to use.

post a picture if you can, if worse comes to worse maybe sanding that scratch out a bit with a finer grit might help

That feature is turned off, use the normal Gallery for uploading pictures. This thread will teach you everything you'll ever need to know about working with photos on the Internet.

When you sanded the paint did you sand in straight lines?

Are the scratches you're trying to remove in straight lines?

If they are then that's a pretty good sign you didn't get out all of your sanding marks. A rotary buffer is the right tool for removing sanding marks or by hand with M105 or UC

When we did the wetsanding I believe I was sanding in all sorts of directions. Including straight lines and circular motions. I just snapped some pics, i'll see if I can post them shortly.

                        Thanks Mike.
