  • Holograms with m80 not m83??

So I'm detailing a black Lexus IS 350 and I know Japanese cars are known for having soft paint. It has pretty bad swirls so I go to work with m80 on a polishing pad speed 5 on the G110. I do a test spot and pull it in the sun and there are holograms, some swirls are gone too. I found this strange to do that and started wondering if there was something wrong with my process since it happened on the honda fit and this normally doesn't happen. My pad I was using is pretty used and has gone through a lot so I took out a brand new fresh pad and did another test spot. Same results. I put some m66 over it and it took out the holograms so I guess I will just follow it with that.

However there were still swirls and after 2 m80 passes I wanted to try something more aggressive. I went to m83. Did a test spot, and there were definitely less swirls but there was barely any holograms. The m80 holograms were much much worse. How does this even make sense? Could I have a bad bottle of m80, I did shake it up. Should I do the car with m83 and then follow with 66 rather than 80 then 66?

On top of things my G110 died randomly. It started slowing down and speeding up and now can't stay at a steady speed. I have another one here though so I can still finish the job. The paint is just perplexing me.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

You know I did a few other test spot and the hologramming is still there for the m83. I think I will just do m83 followed by 80 because there will still be holograms to remove anyways and that way m80 can remove any other micromarring m83 may have caused. Then follow that up with m66 to take care of holograms. Sorry I basically answered my own thread haha.

      That's the ticket

Best thing is a test spot to get a process dialed in then do the whole car.

Glad you found what works. 83/80 is a great combo, there are newer products like the M205 that you may like as well.

Keep us posted and put some pix up in a Show Off. I like Lexus cars and a nice shiny black one especially.

Yeah this car is a pain in the butt. Unfortunately the m83 won't take everything out, some of it is pretty deep. Its just taking forever having to do m83 then m80 then m66 then an LSP ugggg. Haha

Are you only using 80 on a yellow polishing pad? If so, you may want to try it with a finishing pad. It might finish down nice enough that you won't need the additional step down with 66.

Re: Holograms with m80 not m83??

I've had that problem with the micro-marring on most cars, regardless of pad, speed, technique, new or used pads. M80 and M83 are awesome products, but on many cars they need to be followed by something even more gentle. I have found the Scratch-X formulated for DA works wonders for this, and I've heard Color-X is as good or maybe better because I believe it also have polishing oils as well as a wax. the darker the car, the more obvious the micro-marring is. On some lighter cars it sometimes isn't that noticeable and still looks fine, but on black it can look murky.

            My current process:
Rotary and M80 and yellow pad (M83 or M84 to start with if it needs it)
DA and black pad with Scratch-x on speed 3 or less (and will soon try M202 )
NXT 2.0 wax with black pad speed 3, removed with microfiber bonnet speed 5

Everyone thinks my '06 45k mile Altima is brand new.....except for right now when it' covered in the MN salt!
