  • Holograms with m80 and G110

Hey there guys, So yesterday I was detailing a Black Honda Fit. I washed with Gold Class and then used a Mild Blue Clay Bar. I then started off with a test spot of m80 on the m8006 pad with my G110. It sure took out the swirls pretty well however it left behind holograms. I decided to go to something less aggressive so I used m09 on another m8006 pad. It did the same thing. I am a member of f150online and a few members told me that Honda paint is soft and the m80 could just be too abrasive for it. One suggested using m80 on a 9006 pad which has no cut. Still no luck in taking the holograms out.

What do you suggest that I do to remove swirls yet not induce holograms?

Also someone said that m09 swirl remover has no cut in it but its just fillers, is this true? The bottle says that it has cut???

    Thanks.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
    Remove swirls my friends.

Re: Holograms with m80 and G110

We try not to make blanket statements about paint hardness or softness as it relates to a car company as they tend to have more than on manufacturing plant and because they are always changing paint systems.

So don't let yourself get trapped into the simple logic you read on other forums...

Did you go over the entire car?

Or did you do a "Test Spot"?

If you did a "Test Spot" like we write about on this forum ALL the time, then you only have a small area we need to help you fix.

    Will wait for your answers....

M09 is a swirl mark remover, it contains diminishing abrasives. It's a very gentle paint cleaner as we have a wide spectrum of products to help people with whatever problem they are working on.

As for the person that posted what you read, remember their forum name and in the future give them all the respect and credibility they deserve on ANY topic. (Which is none)

Haha alright thank for clearing up that m09 has abrasives in it (I thought so)

And I did just two test spots on the hood ( one of m80 and then m09 over that and then one with just m09 and then I went back over both with m80 on a 9006 pad, so it isn't too much to correct )

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

Since you're coming to the "Open Garage" this week can we take a look at it in person instead of typing about it?

Then we can post what we did to fix it with pictures for anyone that gets themselves in the same position.

How long are you working a section with M80?

I have a Fit and the clear is stupid soft.It seems to hologram with any kind of cutting or light cutting pad with a DA.For example a white LC pad with optimum polyseal and my fit was hologram city.I corrected it all with a non cutting pad and a mild polish. Please keep us posted on how you got this corrected I would like to know.

I'd like to see what you come up with Mike. The finish on my new TSX is the same way.

#80 and a G110 leaving holograms? Wow... that is pretty interesting.

Are you 100% sure that you didn't just clean away whatever may have been hiding pre-existing holograms?

It's actually possible to leave an hologram type swirl similar to what a rotary buffer will do using a DA Polisher, just depends on the pad, the product and the paint.

Most of the time with a DA Polisher you'll see a uniform haze we call haze or micro-marring. But it is possible to leave behind a pattern like an RB will do.

A person should never have this over the entire car as long as they do a test spot first.

Yeah, I can imagine it is possible with the right combo, I just never figured 80 and a DA would be "that" combo.

I guess this brings up the concepts of always starting with the least aggressive option first and going from there + using a test spot.

Believe it or not PO85rd and a lc grey pad took out all the swirls and holograms on my wifes fit with a pc 7424 on speed 6.I do not know what Meguiars products will compare with these(I am trying to find out) but po85 was the most aggresive I could go with a DA.

I found that to work on my TSX too...though I used a Blue LC pad.

What is weird is that I couldn't see the swirls with my Xenon light. I had gone over the car with ColorX and a W-8006 pad. The test spot looked great under the Xenon, so I did the whole car. It was a day or two later in the sun that I noticed very, very light swirling. Nothing like that of a rotary. I also tried the new PRC with a W9006 pad too, and again it looked good under the Xenon, but in the sun the swirls showed up again.

Not sure what it is about this Honda paint but I'd like to see what Meguiars can come up with tomorrow.
