    The idea behind,

"Cleaning your pad on the fly"

Is you're trying to clean your pad and get back to work, thus the name, cleaning your pad on the fly...

For this reason you hold the terry cloth towel against the face of the foam pad at the setting the polisher is already on as this is supposed to be done "on the fly", not turn the speed to another setting, clean the pad, then turn the speed setting back to where it was, and now get back to work.

In the real world, the cleaning step takes the longest, you can speed things up by cleaning your pad often as this enables the foam, oscillating action and chemical to work best, but if you mess with speed settings each time you clean your pad you don't save any time and it's no long an "on the fly" procedure.

    Make sense?

This technique by the way can be found in the how-to articles section on this forum,

I've been having the same problems that you've been experiencing with M83, and while my technique has improved 100%, I still hate using that product. I don't know what the problem is, but even when I buff a small 16" x 16" area, the product wants to go to a dry buff after only a couple of passes. Then, even with frequent pad cleaning, the pad gums up with product after only a couple of panels and the buffer stops rotating.

I highly recommend you buy some M80 Speed Glaze; it is so much easier to work with than M83 and the product is so rich in oils that you'll never go to a dry buff. It'll require a couple of passes with M80 to match M83's cutting power, but it is SOOO much more enjoyable than fighting with M83 IMO. I buffed out a friend's car last weekend and I was almost ready to tear my hair out fighting with M83. I wipped out the Speed Glaze and made two passes over the entire car in the same time it would've taken me to do a few panels with M83 alone.

While it's a little harder to use, the results are usually pretty good.

Correct, this is why we show this product in all our Saturday Classes, it's pretty much "Bubba Proof".

This is true for most people and the project they're working on.

        Good insights...

I have to agree that M83 is hard to work with, BUT once you get it down, it'll knock down the deeper swirls with ease. I had problems with dusting at first but got it figured out for the most part. Depends on cars. Our Neon is hard as rocks CC but the Yukon is softer and once fixed (I did the hood not too long ago) easier to maintain with M80 or DC #1 then wax.

I seem to have alot of dust as well when using the M83...what did you do to reduce the dust?

Re: PC 7424 first use...what am I doing wrong?

I think I improved my technique a bit tonight. I think I was applying too much pressure before, since the pad didn't rotate with the amount of pressure I was using. (Thanks for the tip, Mike!) I backed off on pressure until the pad rotated pretty well, and worked a smaller area with M83. I cleaned the pad "on the fly" after every application of product. I did a few passes with M83 then followed that up with a few passes of M80. Then just for fun I did a pass with #7. Looks fantastic in the garage under flourescent lights, but I won't really know until it's out in the sun tomorrow. I'll try and get some pics.

Overall I feel like I got much better results by improving my technique a bit. Thanks for all of the advice I'll try and post some "sun" pics tomorrow.

                Atta baby.

I had the same problem, no spinning, too much pressure and about a full diapers worth of 80 or 83 in my pads.

Now, I feel like an old pro. Except I'm not really. LOL.

The best advice once you got your products AND start with least aggresive AND doing a test panel/spot is PATIENCE. I really don't have none, so it's hard for me.

                Can't wait for some pix.

Re: PC 7424 first use...what am I doing wrong?

OK I finally got some good pictures. I was relieved to see that all of the good advice that resulted in improved technique paid off!

Here's the before pic - lots of deep scratches, swirls, and holograms (click to see larger image):

Here's the after pic - still some very minor scratches, but I'm sure I can work those out with a few more passes. Overall I'm very pleased:

I worked the section from the edge of the fender to the hood crease - I haven't touched the center of the hood yet. I'll finish off the hood this weekend and post some "finished" pics

Thanks for all of the great advice and help

Ok so say the 83 is not cutting it with the DA and I decide to use a rotary. My rotary has a 7" backing plate I think so what pad would I use? Would I still use a orange lake country pad on it like I do on the DA?

Let's keep this thread on topic please, the question your asking would probably be better if you just started your own thread.

The answer is, if you have a 7" backing plate, then you want to use a 8" pad, either foam or wool depending upon what you're trying to do.

Well I was reading some replies in this thread about if the 83 on a DA wasnt cutting it to go to a rotary. Sorry though I can start a new thread if I need 2.

This thread is primarily about using a DA Polisher, if you are interested in how to use a rotery buffer with M83 or any product it would be better to start a thread about using the rotary buffer, that's all. There's a limit to what a DA Polisher can do, and when you hit this limit and the DA Polisher is no longer getting the job done to your satisfaction then it's time to look at,Learning to live with the defect(s)Learning to use the rotary bufferHiring someone that knows how to use a rotary bufferWe're already on page 3 of this thread, thus the suggestion of starting a new thread versus taking this one in a new direction, that's all.
